Default Sound Deadening in Front Footwells

Has anyone removed the sound insulation from the front footwells and replaced it with something else or simply leveled out the floor? If so what did you do and do you have any pics of the finished results?

TIA.

Mine was cracked and badly worn where the heel of your foot rests at the base of the accelerator pedal. The damage was limited to an area that was approximately 6" x6" that could be patched. I vacuumed it and filled it with liquid rubber, which is flexible and will bond to the substrate and to the rubber surface. The liquid rubber is self leveling to a degree and shrinks as it dries, so it had to be poured in in numerous layers over several weekends. Drying time is about four hours for each layer. When I was satisfied with the newly leveled surface, I covered it with a neoprene rubber patch which I glued down with 3M trim adhesive. I purchased to neoprene rubber from a local rubber boat repair facility - expensive material - sold by the square inch! The result was perfect - particularly for something that resides under a floor mat.

I just spent Saturday morning ripping all the sound deadening and carpet from the passenger side of my car. I'll do the driver side in a week or two when I get time. The passenger side was about 20 lbs of stuff. I'm still debating trying to clean all the glue off (what a PITA) or to simply cover it back up with very light weight carpet. I noticed last year that when the car sits outside, there is a leak somewhere and all that foam soaks up a hell of a lot of water.

Or you can do like the factory race 964's and use thin plywood to ride above the wiring harness, with spacers to keep it flat.

Bill,
I was thinking about that option with the plywood, as my padding is all chewed up, and seems to absorb water on the passenger side . Anyone got any pictures of what the piece looked like that Porsche used? I'm assuming that it was birch or oak plywood maybe 1/4".

Thanks,
Dave

What is the effect sound wise of the removal of the sound deadening there? not too much road/ tire noise?

mine was cut trough to install a former alarm system that is now gone. a REAL dodgy job... I temporarly put some foam from a matress but i am looking for a way to properly patch it as the sound deadening is in good condition otherwise.

One option to wearing out the foam padding is covering it with textured aluminum sheeting. You can see a picture in an article on 964 track preparation here.

You can see a picture of the wooden floorboard in a Carrera Cup car here. (about the 4th picture down)
