Default Brakes

Hi,
Am I right in saying that there are different sized rear caliper's that were fitted to the C2 some time after the 1990 model ? ( am sure I have read this somewhere, but for the life of me can't think where it was now ) The calipers on mine are quite small on the rear's.

If this is the case is it possible to upgrade the rear calipers for direct replacements from later model ?? Am not looking to go overboard on the brakes as far as mod's go , so looking for the cheapest solution ( if such a think exisits !! ).

Thanks for any input at all on this

Yes, you are right. The C2 had 2 piston calipers until MY92 (I think). From then on, it shared the larger rear 4 piston calipers used with the C4. By changing to the larger rear calipers you'll open up a wider choice of rear pads.

The larger calipers can be fitted quite easliy. You have to change the brake bias valve when doing so. If you don't track the car, you'll probably notice no difference though! Others on here have done the swap, so I'm sure you'll get some first hand repsonses!!

Yes. Jimq is doing that right now. Rear brakes from a C4 I think.

Sorry, I have no more info... but needed to post since I just love your avatar

If you change the rear calipers from the from 2 to 4 piston type, you must also change the bias valve from 45 bar to 55 bar (part # 964.355.305.10 for the 55 bar valve, 964.355.305.00 for the 45 bar valve).

I am in the process of painting the new 4 piston calipers now. I got a new 55 bar bias valve from Sunset Imports (cheapest price I found). You might want to replace the brake lines at the same time. A few of us us got SS ones and Jaime has a write up on installing them. The brake pads are much cheaper on the 4 piston ones as an added bonus. If you are thinking of doing this PM me and I can give you the names of a couple guys that contacted me about selling me calipers. Just as a point of reference I paid $200 for a set off a 94 C2.
I agree with jaime one of the nicest avitars on rennlist

EDIT: Just noticed you are across the pond. shipping of 20lbs of calipers from over here might be a bit expensive!

Willie,

There is an article on brakes that may answer some questions. It's in Word .doc format, and is located here.

Jeremy Pinsly is 100% spot on with his comments. This is exactly what I did on my '90 C2 and it was very straightforward. For my red calipers I used "plasti-kote" brake caliper paint from my local auto parts store . It has held up remarkably well for the 3 years since I put it on (which included a number of track days).

Regards,

Jim G.
