Default 964 help

been looking at possibly buying a 964 cab with 66000 miles. the price is about $27,000 and the pics look good except for the massive sound system that takes up the whole trunk. i have a 77s and thats the only porsche i have ever driven . i know i need to get a ppi done and test drive the car. the car is about 2000 miles away and have found some shops that will do the ppi but i am a little shy because the price seems low compared to others of the same year, the dealer said the car has been on the lot for quite awhile and i have heard that the 964 is high maintenence $$$.
i was also wondering if the 993 is a better choice.

For that price it should be in incredible condition, or put another way, that's not an especially low price. It all depends on how well it was maintained and the current state it's in. There are plenty out there so take your time searching.
993s are great too but will command significantly more money. Other than not having to do valve adjustments, they have to be maintained just like a 964 and I don't think one is necessarily easier than the other. The 993 oil change is more complicated because there are 2 filters instead of one but I don't think it's a huge deal. They have their own maintenance quirks just like every other 911 (SAI problems, the CEL issue, read more about these on the 993 board.)

27+2k minimum in shipping is 30K, plus getting rid of any maintenance issues, since with a sound system like that, you might want to take it out..... I would think about looking for another car... or one closer...

32-35 might find you a 993 with lower miles a 95 probably, and who knows it might be closer. I just bought a 964cab with 18k miles for less than what that guy is asking for the one you are looking at, now I realize I got a good deal, but it is in CA and I am in FL, so 1750 for shipping, but cest la vie..

Just be careful, and wait for the right car, all 911's are terrific, just don't get in over your head.

I have been seeing 95 993's with that mileage in the mid to high 20's lately. Looks like they are coming down as they get older also. 27K is a bit steep. What year is the car and model?

PPI is very inexpensive insurance ($150-$300). Also, if the car has been on the lot for awhile, they are bound to negotiate. I paid $19k for an '89 C4 coupe (48,000 miles) this summer from a guy I knew. You didn't mention the year or the car's location-both can affect the price. As far as repairs...your buying a 15 (?) year-old German sports car...everything will be a bit more expensive, but so fun to drive.

As stated above, patience is key - it took me 5 years to find mine.

Just as another datapoint, I paid $24K for a 1992 964 cab with 70K miles a few months ago. I'm in California and it has been in this state it's entire life. Bone stock and well maintained with receipts.
I've read everything I can find on the 964 and there is nothing overly costly as far as maintenence goes. Every model year has it's issues. The earlier 964s had their share of problems but from what I hear they have usually been taken care of by now.

So far I have replaced the alternator (got a Bosch reman for $157), mostly as a preemptive strike. The bearing was on it's way out.

Oh, and I love this car.

Russ,

I agree with others that $27k is very high for an average car, or the car should be near perfect for that price tag. Model year would help us to assess value. Early 964's rarely reach that price, but a late (93 or 94) 964 could get to that price point depending on condition and location in the world. 66,000 miles on the car tends to tell us it was used either in a low mileage daily driver situation (which is not good for air cooled cars) or is right on for a 2nd or 3rd fun car.

I would highly suggest finding several 964's in your area to test drive. Maybe the local PCA region has an owner or two that would let you ride along and drive their car. The 964 is a vastly different animal than your '77. It was designed to be a much more refined car with very tangible increases in power and comfort. Be sure a 964 (or 993 for that matter) is what you are after.

The 993 model is starting to show it's age and regular problems are starting to occur. Some of the Check Engine Light (CEL) issues that are coming up are a bit concerning. At least with the 964, if you have the cylinder to head leak, that is an expensive fix, but a permanant fix. Do it once and you're done. With the Freudenberg Dual Mass Flywheel issue that early 964's have, spend $2000 on a new LUK flywheel and it's labor to install and you're done for a long time. I wonder if some of these fixes for the '96 to '98 993's CEL issues are permanant...? 993's are great cars and are an advancement of the 964 (obviously), just do your homework.

It's been my experience that nice cars do not last long on the market place unless they are severely overpriced. Cars that sit tend to have some issues...(issues could be mechanical, pricing, cosmetic or all of the above).

When I bought my 90 C4 this summer, I saw prices ranging from $22 to $30 + for clean cars with less than 60k miles. I sold my '95 993 Cab with 12,000 miles in 2001 for $48k, now they are in the low $30's. Either model is fun to drive. Had 0 issues with the 993 but it also had only 7500 miles when I got it in dallas. My 964 has it quirks being 15 years young but drives great and handles superb. I was initally worried that a minor oil drip was from the gasket less head design which is very expensive to fix. But a reliable Porsche shop took care of it for few hundred buck, keep your 964 away from a dealer's shop. Most don't know squat about 964's unless thye speak German. It's still a good choice. If I get another P-car, it will be a 1993 anniversay model if around or a RS 3.8 964 which is also scarce.

I just bought a 93 964 C2 Cab with 45K miles on it in great shape for $28K. So the price in my view is alright. Here in Atlanta, I aw older cabs (86 to 87) going for the $24-27K range as well with mileage in the mid 60K.

sorry guys i forgot to mention that this car is a 94
and is in gig harbor washington about 2000 miles away from charlotte nc.

i did speak to a local 911 shop today and he thinks that i need to find one under 50k miles.

1994 is probably one of the best years for 911's. All the problems with the 964 series were worked out by then. The $27k is more realistic now.

Did the local shop give a reason for looking for an under 50k mileage car? I'd buy based on condition, not just mileage. Low mileage cars have their own set of problems. I'd take a very well maintained '94 964 with 66k on the clock over an abuse or seldom used 964 with 30k on the clock (and I've seen cars with low mileage in terrible condition). 66,000 miles is nothing for a 911.

While I am no closer to NC, I have a 90 C4 Cab with 43k miles on it for sale. It has the vent kit, DMF replaced with LUK type and new clutch less than 3000 miles ago. Car is triple black and in perfect condition. Car also had a top-end rebuild due to failed valve springs also less than 3000 miles ago.
