It is such a big topic. I figure the 911 has been around for a really long time with no box or shields, so mine has gone retro.

I think the smooth underside is a result of Porsche getting a wind tunnel about the same time as the development of the 964. Porsche went gu gu over their new toy and the smooth bottoms of the 928 GT and the 964 were the results. The 928's even had moving aero intake noses.

Wink Top Ten Factors for Consideration When Deciding About The D*mn Tray.

(Presented as a public service for those who are losing sleep over this issue )

1. In summer around here, the car runs hot. (off)
2. In fall, winter, and spring around here, the car runs cool and doesn't boil off the condensation in the oil tank. (on)
3. At legal and somewhat extralegal speeds, aerodynamics are a minor factor. (wash)
4. The tray protects the underside of the engine. (on)
5. The tray hides minor leaks. Fewer embarassing drips on people's driveways. (on)
6. The tray hides minor leaks. Harder to catch and fix 'em early. (off)
7. The tray hides minor leaks. But if they're minor, who cares? (wash)
8. The tray adds weight. (off)
9. It's harder to raise the car with the tray in place. (off)
10. The car is quieter with the tray. (off)
So after in-depth analysis, for me, the tray stays off. Whew! My mechanic will be proud. YMMV.
