Hello all - interested in how many people rate the performance of clay bar treatments, I have a kit but havent used it yet, and wondered what everyone thought...

Thanks - Graham.

Hi Graham!

I've have used the Zymol Clay Bar with good results, but I don't think I'll use it again - too scared to scratch my paintwork to s**t!

Nothing beats it in term of cleaning the paint.

Before routine was: wash, paint cleaner, polish, wax.
My routine now is: wash, clay, polish, wax.

The difference in the before and now routine can be felt with my hands. Besides, the clay is much faster and less taxing than the cleaner. And I do have a Porter Cable.

I agree with Anthony. It workes great... pulls contaminants right out of the paint. Don't worry! Use lots of lube and there's no risk of scratching paint. Afterwards, you can polish and wax your clean paint.

Graham,

I'd encourage you to try it. Make sure you keep it very well lubricated (with the cleaner spray) and you will be amazed at how smooth the paint feels once you've finished. A polish and wax afterwards will come up like you've never seen it before.

I use the Meguiars kit (it's a little cheaper than the Zymol kit) but they all work in much the same way. As the clay bar gets dirty I've found that you can clean it with some washing up liquid and a nail brush although you can fold it and stretch it (like pastry) to reveal a clean surface. As long as it's reasonable clean AND well lubricated there isn't much risk of damaging the paint. You don't need to use much pressure (if any) - the bar should just glide over the paint.

I'd certainly recommend it!!

Regards

Dave

Yep - go for it but as said above DO use plenty of lubricant and keep the clay bar with a clean side to the paintwork. I did mine once and haven't needed to do it again.

I didn't need to use it on my P-car yet, but the CLK was the first guinea pig for me last year.

The first stroke felt like I was dragging sandpaper across the finish (yea, it was well lubed). The second was a bit better, then from the third on, it was like oil on a mirror! The paint was smoooooooth!

After I used Zaino, I had an incredible shine.

I have used it and it works well for its intended application. However, unless the car has sat out for extended periods of time, I think a cleaner/polish on a DA style buffer works in most cases.

I definitely don't use it EVERY time I wax, but once every few months definitely. Also, any spots that get rough to the touch I'll use the clay to touch up. Really makes a big difference.

I think it makes a great job. One sure way of checking your surface is to do the following test , which yes , sounds daft but does work. Gently rub your hand over the paint surface using a plastic bag ( ie a Freezer bag or of same type ). You will find that the surface will feel like sand paper if you have never used the clay bar treatment. Then treat a small section and try the 'bag' test again. It will feel like glass and you will realise all the time you will have wasted in the past thinking you have achieved a good finish !!!!

Is there a link with a video showing the correct way? I watched a bud doing his 993 and he kinda rolled the clay. Was his 1st try at it, and since he's my best friend I can say he may not have known what he was doing either.

Brian, not everytime you wax but every few months???

How often do you wax that car? Sounds like you wax the car as often as my wife waxes her legs.

Brilliant tool. Takes all the tiny specs of krud off your paint that you'd otherwise never see. makes the finish so smooth. highly reccommended.

Does anyone know whether a clay bar will help with the pink discolouring that I have found on my car in the last few months?
