Default Oil Coolers - looking for some ideas

Hi there folks,

As most of you know my car is on it's way back from Va and one of the items i need to replace durring the rebuild is the oil cooler.
The reason i am thinking of this is the Cup cars use the same right hand side oil coolers as the stock cars. This i have discovered is not enough cooling for intensive track days, trips in semi-hot to hot weather, etc. (although i never had problems the oil temp was always up there when idling, moving slow in traffic, etc.)
One of my improvements was to replace the single right hand oil cooler with a single centrally mounted one, i am looking at this instead of the second oil cooler on the left side ala 993 cup/RSR's primarly from a weight stand point.
Anyone done this? have any pictures and or part numbers?
BTW this was the normal "modified" setup on the gt-2 evo's raced here in the states.
I will also be replacing the lines with light weigh goodrich lies as well from the dry sump to the cooler.
Thanks

Here's a shot of my 2nd oil cooler installed in place of the A/C condenser. The cooler is the same unit as the one on the right side. This is what the factory used. I was able to get the factory oil line too. Do not bother with the Turbo S 2nd oil cooler, it is not sufficient for track use.

yep - just got off the phone with Steve at Rennsportsystems - that is what i am going to use. I am ditching the single cooler idea b/c it requires modification of the tub which i won't do.

Thanks

I assume this precludes the use of A/C? What alternatives are available for sufficient track cooling for a 964 with A/C? only cutting the tub for a center mount and changing the bumper (I assume there is some crash foam and an aluminum rail behind the bumper cover as well, in the center.

Thanks in Advance.

The factory had a kit to install a second cooler on the left side, I bought one from Gert and installed it.

I deleted the fan on the right side and have had no issues with overheating in traffic BTW.

I also ditched the right side fan.

Here ia a picture of the factory kit laid out for inspection. The most difficult and ctitical piece to obtain is the cooler mounting pan pictured above the circular coil of snap molding. This is a left hand version of the one supplied on the right.

I think Gert may have found out about it when I ordered it from him.

The whole kit is part number 964.207.022.81 and I think I actually received the supercession to the 993 kit since the little rubber fillers had 993 part numbers and did not fit.

The parts catalog is not clear on the part number for the cooler mounting pan since the left side cooler in the parts book is not keyed to illustrations like the right side cooler parts are.

For the right side the part number for this "console" is 993.504.138.00 (yes 993) and this is shown as a normal street part as are all the parts in the right side installation. Its funny I can find the illustration for this part in PET but no part number is listed.

For the left side the only "console" shown has part number 964.107.901.00 and this is shown as a racing part, so my guess is this is the number.

I just checked the Carnewal site and the P93 GT oil cooler kit he is showing is similar to but NOT the same as the factrory kit.

I think the Carnewal kit is a Cargraphic kit but I am not sure.

My kit was around $1800 as I recall.

That's one neat installation!

Is is custom-made for your car or is it generally available?

PMNA has recently sole ALL of their 964/993 racing parts and so there are none that are available. I found this out while looking for the bracket for my car. The kit the Gert has called the "GT Oil Cooler Kit" looks like some type of aftermarket oil cooler the same size as a factory one. Looks good, but is expensive.

I think you can get an A/C lower mount and modify it to work with a factory right side oil cooler. This leaves only the ducting to make which you can do easily out of aluminum sheet like the factory, or carbon fibre. I think the ducting is the most important part to ensure the air goes through the cooler rather than around. I'll let you know how I make out with mine once my car comes back from the paint shop. It is one of the first projects so the fenders and front end can be bolted together.

Geoffery,
That is another issue i was worried about actually - I have not had time to call PMNA yet (day job) but was planning to when i got a chance. If that is the case then it looks like i will have to use a second right cooler and custom fab the brackets and ducting (same as you) let me know how it turns out or go with the aftermarket cooler. I just hate paying 1,650.00 for a 350.00 oil cooler with 1300.00 brackets and lines.
