For me, the last classic 911 left assembly line in early 1989, hence designation 911 Carrera...the last classic is the one with no factory extra designation such as 964 or 993...I consider the 964 borderline between worlds and the 993 the ultimate aircooled Porsche...probably the last collectible and depreciationproof of the P-cars...

I think it has to both the 964 & 993 !
Well having from two 996's (C4 & C2) back to a 964 C2 I just realised how much I love the car that I owned 5 years ago ( 1991 964 C4).
I must confess that I loved my two 993's as well.
Only had my 1993 964 C2 for just over 2 weeks, and it really gives me a buzz, both the 996's were so unreliable they just had to go !
IMHO I think the 964 and 993 will be sought after.

Another vote for the 964 (especially the turbos) - as the last, classic 911's... My 2nd fav is the 993. I traded my 996 for the 964 turbo, when i realized that it really wasn't a 911 at all... (except in name).

Get one 993 and one 964, and say one is for the wife! Have both, IMHO the 993 takes it. Handling better, power (a little) better, looks even. Sunny and warm days we drive the 964 Cab, every other day 993 Coup. Both cars turn heads.

"The last thing I wanted to start is internecine warfare among 964 coupe, cabrio and targa aficionados, which is why I was careful to use the plural. I’ll leave it to the coupe owners to decide whether it is the 964 or 993 coupe that is the “truer” classic. And as I recall, the original Porsches were open cars, a point in favor of the cabrios. Hey, they are all great cars!"
I agree...I've owned coupes and loved them. The 993 is lovely, but I love driving through the 964's tunnel between the head lights. Don't mean nuthin' to nobody but me...

I'd have to opine that the 3.2 Carrera is the last "classic" 911, and the 964 is the beginning of the "modern" 911...proper suspension, ABS, proper (and reasonably effective) AC, more liveable on a day-to-day basis...
Please understand that I believe the 964 is better for being a "modern" car, but when I think of "classic" 911, I have to go back to torsion bars, no ABS, five controllers for the "climate control", tip-toe in the wet, etc....
I guess it all depends on what you consider "classic"...to me it's "pre-modern" and the 964 is definitely "modern".

The last real 911 left the factory in 1973, ...no in -77, ...oh no in -83, excuse me in -86, ...darn in -89 i mean, ...no wait in -93, ...err in -98 and the last one was the 993!
But hey a GT3 is a very good car, it just doesn't talk to you in the way a air/oilcoold does.

If you ask me, the last real 911 to come from the factory is the 997S. But you probably didn't...so let's not go there...

Define classic - if you consider the look of the 911 series car, I agree but if you base it on the use of the original platform (including that wonderful air cooled motor), the 993 is the last. All that said, I love my 993 but I want a 964 so I can retro-ize it to the look of a 1973 RS.
Then again, I really want to have both

The "last classic" is hard to call. Where do you draw the line? How do you define the word classic - these days it means anything thats 'good' really. You could say the GT3 is the last classic 911 as it has great looks, handling and power which is what made the very first 911 stand out from the crowd.

I'm going to have to agree with Doug&Julie. The jump from 3.2 to 964 is so drastic. Power steering, color-coded bumpers, lots more electronics...driving a 3.2 is very different. They said a 964 was 85% new and it sure seems like it when you compare the two. I guess as far as the headlights go, which many would argue is the most signature 911 design feature, the 964 is the last. Tough call.

I have to agree somewaht with Doug&Julie.
Although the 964 looks very much like the earlier 911 it is 85% different. So much so that is why the factory coded it 964 to differntiate the difference between the earlier 911 and the newer model. Looks may appear to be similar but after owning 2 SC's for many years and driven many earlier 911's and 930's the cars are much different. The 964 is much stiffer and the suspension is far superior without all the funky difflection from the torsion bars. I would say the 993 is less different than the 964 in overall feel than the 964 is to the 911. IMO the 964 was the best of the 911 series to date. I like all 911's for different reasons but to me the 964 especially the turbo offers more to its driver than any other model. The 993TT and GT3 may be superior handling cars but they lack the raw feel of the earlier 911's and the earlier 911's although great are shy on the upgrades that make the 964 the safe fun car it is. The 964 to me is the perfect balance between modern and classic.
