Default Replacing the windshield seal Qs

My seal is badly distorted from age and the ravages of Mother Earth and I'm thinking it's time to replace it. My windshield, however, is absolutely perfect. I also have no reason to believe that I have any rust to contend with, although I know there very well may be a bit hiding beneath the seal. I've done my search, and I still have a few questions... Does the windshield absolutely have to be replaced? What are the chances that it can be removed without breaking it? Any ideas of the price of a new windshield? Anybody have any experience with this issue?

Default windshield rubber

no need to replace glass to change rubber. someone might tell you this to scam you of more cash. especially a windshield place. maybe if you are not doing it yourself find a place that restoes cars and they should have plenty of experience in doing this. make sure they work on porsche

Brian - I had a dime-sized spot of rust fixed by the front WS seal last year. A great bodyshop removed the windshield, fixed the rust, and replaced the WS without it getting broken (used a new seal to install) - so no, the WS does not have to be replaced.

p.s. YMMV as they are fragile at this age though.

That's what I'm afraid of, and I know there's no guarantee that it'll make it out unscathed. Mostly I was just wondering if others had done the same thing with positive results. Looks like at least a few have. So that's a good sign. I'm crossing my fingers.

Anyone know how much a new windshield runs? My coupe's is so pitted, I can hardly see out of it when driving into the sunset!

Hiya bhensarl
If you cut away the rubber from the glass , the glass will be easy to remove . Don't cut the rubber away from the body . The lip of rubber that goes over the edge of the glass is what needs cutting away .
The tool I like is a carving blade "V" shaped .

Last summer I think my insurance company paid around $850ish for an OE Sekurit, the aftermarket (PPG?) version (harder glass) was going to be around $350ish.

Had mine taken out to repair a rust spot, went back in with original seal, no leaks no problem.

Must be nice. I'm with Garrett - my windshield and headlight lenses are so pitted they look frosted. I just replaced a broken foglight and the contrast in appearance between the old and the new has to be seen to be believed. As for the windshield, I was given a WAG quote from a glass guy of "about $1500" so for now I just drive east in the evening and west in the morning...
