Replacing the speedo
Can see lots of posts on gauges, but nothing that might help me on this...
I have a 1990 C4 LHD, which has the speedo in KPH. Not a major problem, but my wife drives the car and maths has never been her strong point...
I have found a company which can get me speedos in MPH, but before I but it I wondered if anyone knew how easy/hard a job it is to switch them over. I don't know if it is just a straight swap, or whether there are electronics on the engine that need to be replaced....
Any help appreciated.
Thanks

Hi Brad,
To pull your speedo is really pretty simple, just cover the end of a flat blade screwdriver with a few coats of tape and insert it under the edge of the gauge to pry it up - GENTLY !
After you get it unseated you can grab it and just pull it out. You might try twisting it as you go. Disconnect the one connector and your done.
You can send the speedo to North Hollywood Speedometer and have them put a US version gauge face on it. These read both KPH and MPH.
I have attached some pix to show you.
Hope this helps !

Tom, that's fantastic! At least, you're piccies make it look easy...
Does anyone know if you can just get new faces for the dials? Would this be a viable option?

The other day, I was bored and felt a need to take something apart, so I decided to pop out my Tach. This was never a problem on any of my other cars, but on the 964, the tach came out only till it hit the steering wheel hub- could not get out all the way. Anyhow, since I was just messing around, it put it back. I did not want to get too assertive about it. What am I doing wrong?

. . . wow, I hit exactly the same problem today, taking out the tach on my 993 coupe (yes, I do pop in this forum on occasion). With large screw driver wrapped in electrical tape I gently popped out the tach. Once you get full 'finger' grip, the tack will only come out about 3/4", the plastic cover over the steering wheel switches is on the way. I've tried pushing the gauge upwards and out but it was a no-go My guess it that the steering wheel may need to come off or at least the upper part of back plastic switch shroud taken off. Well, I backed off . . .
I decided to go 'around the tach and remove two adjacent gauges to gain access behind. I discovered no OBC connector in the 993 wiring harness and that means that 'upgrade to OBC' project is now shelved
BTW, I understand that 964 cars came with tach w/OBC wiring connector available behind the dash and some 964 owners were able to upgrade to On-Board Computer option. True ? ? ?

Horst, You have waaay too much time on your hands ! That is how my jack got hot rodded!

Andrey & Horst - The trick to getting the tach out is to pull it out just a little way and rotate the gauge 180 degrees. The gauge is not as "thick" on the bottom as it is on the top. You might want to unplug the connector as well to give it a little more freedom.
As you pull it out tilt it forward at the top of the gauge and it will come out of the dash.
Here is a picture of the tach coming out - note the bottom is not as thick as the top.

Nice Jack!
Horst:
While you're down in the garage checking the center caps, make sure the locking lug nut is on the red painted wheel stud. Then make sure the center cap points to the locking lug nut which in turn should point to the valve stem, which in turn should be in the same position as the red or yellow dot on the tire that is applied by the manufacturer of the tire... As you say, you can never be too careful...
