Smile 911 & Porsche World - 964 Issue

The March issue of the mag is now in the shops here in the UK. There is a 13 page 964 buyers guide which is accurate and positive + a review of a 1990 Carrera 4 RS Lightweight (only 20 made) + a story on buying a 964 in Germany and importing it back into the UK. Plus 130 pages of other 911 stuff.
I highly recomend you get this issue for the read and to archive with your 964 paperwork in case of future sale.
The mag is distributed all over the world. If you visit the 911 & Porsche World Website you can find your local supplier or buy direct from the UK with online purchase of a single issue or an annual subscription. Delivery is by airmail.

End of unashamed ad. John

Hey Arjan and Randall,
Would you let us know when copy arrives. Interested to know how efficient this service is.
Richard H,
Of course, this is biased propaganda to ensure yet more visibility for my C4 and domination of the media by Guards Red 911s.

Bah!

I can't believe that W H Smiths in Godalming and Guildford still don't have the new issue.

John,

The magazine was in the mail yesterday (I have a subscription so that may make it faster). Great articles - I especially liked your remark reg. a Carrera 4 being a 4-seater as opposed to the 2-seater Carrera 2

The general feeling about the 964 is that it's a good and well-built, and desirable car, although I have to admit that the focus was very much on the earlier cars (89-91). Probably because of the pricing. The later 964's are more expensive, but at the same time have a lot - if not all of the "problems" solved. I find that a pity, as to a certain extent, it makes it look as if there's a lot that can go wrong with a Porsche - but that would be true for any car I'd say.

Besides that, a newer car purchased at an OPC would also come with a full year warranty - I believe Porsche does this unless the car is older than 9 years.

At any rate, it was nice reading!

Arthur,

You are correct regarding the Porsche dealer warranty, its only for cars 9 years or younger, so I guess this is the last year for 964s.

I also agree with you regarding the fact that the article makes it seem like there are lots of mechanical probs with our 964s. I mean, I had never seen such a long (and in small font too) section on what to look out for! My 93 has been quite good too, but I am not saying that out loud for fear that it changes its mind.

I got the magazine a few days ago and it's good However I don't think they picked the best 914/6 for that article - yes there was more than 964s in it. There are many better 914s here in Germany.

However it's amethyst C4's that are going to take over the world.

Red and green belong on traffic lights !!!

Although I think its about time the magazine had some 964 related copy (or dare I say it, some 911 based copy), I am dismayed that the editor thought it would be a good idea to plaster a headline like that across the front.

I think getting any kind of *DECENT* 964 for £13k (regardless of which side the steering wheel is on) is a pipe dream. Ive seen more blue moons. I firmly believe that if something is too cheap, its because it IS too cheap. £13k is wallet-sacrifice territory several months into ownership 99.9% of the time.

I refute the notion that £13k would get you a car like the one shown. If Philip did indeed purchase it for £13k, then he should count himself as VERY fortunate. But that hardly reflects the headline.

Philip - please thank "Editor Horton" for allowing into print the line "...we'd suggest avoiding 964s priced at more than say £21k". I never knew that the magazine had also become a price-fixing cartel. That one line will certainly help all us existing 964 owners when/if we decide to sell.

Hi Will

I actually bought the car for less than £13K, but that price reflects the costs involved in importing it.

I admit it is a very good example, but I know that there are other similar cars available for that sort of money (or less) in Germany. I was lucky, but not that lucky.

If you're ever in the Oxford area, feel free to pop in for a coffee and a look at the car!

Cheers

Phil

Actually the Price is pretty good but I wasn't clear after reading the article if it was bought from a private guy or the garage.

Here in Germany there are several prices. The first range is only in the lists the dealers use to judge the value at which they will buy in a car. These prices would make you cry, they're actually significantly less than the price Phil paid for his car.

The second price range is the territory where private buyers and sellers and the non-franchised Porsche dealers work. Under new EC rules the trade seller has to stand over the car so these prices are going up a bit.

The third price range is the full Porsche Zentrum price which includes a years Guarantee. These usually are very expensive but safe deals.

If you go to www.mobile.de and search under Porsche 964 you'll find 300+ cars starting at 15,000 Euro (200,000+ km) up 75,000 Euro for late Turbs S models.

You can get lucky - I think Phil did. Good luck to him - he deserves it after that sea crossing !!!

My '92 C4 with 125,000km and a full service history is worth about 23,000 Euro - maybe a bit more if I polish it - so I think the numbers in the article are possible.
