Phil

I don't want to dampen your enthusiasm as it does look as if you managed to get a good buy.

But, as your experiences with your previous SC demonstrate, there can be nasty suprises and hidden costs, after all this is still a 10 year old car.

If after a year nothing serious goes wrong then I would confidently say it was a bargain!!!!

Hmm.

Finally got my copy. And no mention of the 965 Turbo anywhere. I can only assume that's because the author is being very strict when discussing the "964" models and is excluding the 965s. Can I assume therefore that in the near future an article will appear dealing with those shining lights, those pinnacles of engineering and performance that is the 965 Turbo range?? Especially, of course, the jewel in the crown, the Turbo 3.6 - I might even know someone who might lend them a Speed Yellow one..

Greg, I only get the magazine when I get off the island so I don't have a full set, but I saw an ad with previous covers on it, and one of the early 2001 mags has what looks like your car on the cover May 2001, I think . Doesn't look like it was an article though

George, fair point, I'm not saying nothing will go wrong (although I'm hoping that!). But of course you could spend £20K on a Porsche and still get expensive bills. My car's had a £7K engine rebuild by an OPC so that should be sound...

Greg, you're right, the author was strict ;-) This was a 964 buyers' guide - the Turbos will come later. And I could be interested in your offer - yellow cars look good in pictures (better than Emerald Green anyway!)

Thanks to everyone for their comments btw. Nice to see the magazine gets read!

Cheers

Phil

Phil, John & Co

a couple of poiints.

1. Agree with will on the crappy headline front. It also happened a couple of months ago with the 993 ("You could buy a 993 like this for £23k" or whatever). I don't think the magazine needs to focus on buying dirt cheap 964's & 993's (what ever happend to the exclusivity of Porsche ownership!!!)

2 To put things into context, the 964 in question was an early model with rectangular mirrors and a swith in the engine hood for lifting the spoiler AND it was LHD. It should be less than£13K!!!

3. If you are patient and a bit lucky you can buy a well looked after UK car in great condition and have change from £20K. My '93 tiptronic cost me £16k, I spent £2k staright away on the things that Strasse in Leeds pointed out in their inspection and I've still got £2k in the bank for a top end rebuild when I need it. The car is the best adrenaline producing machine money can buy.

Lastly, don't blame the photographer for the 'emerald green' car that looked black - shoot the boys in the art dept ot the printers!!!

PPS Is John Miles on the board at 991 & PW!!??

Hi JohnF

Yes, you can find 964s for less than £13K (indeed, mine was - that price included shipping) but I've yet to see a decent one in Europe for less than £12.5K.

Cheers

Woah, what's going on here now?

Johnfm seems to have a problem letting others share the experience if they are not mega rich.
(what ever happend to the exclusivity of Porsche ownership!!!)

There is a basic problem with Porsches in that they are over priced and this gets worse in some markets. If you think the UK is bad have a look at the Irish Prices.

I just looked up the buy-in value of my C4 ('92 FSH, 125kKm) and the book says the dealer should pay 19,163 Euro. This translates to 11,705 GBP. Now all you need is a Porsche dealer looking to offload a trade-in that he doesn't want in his showroom and you've got your deal.

Buying a Porsche is not a problem most people buy more expensive cars. The issue is if you are prepared to take the risk of the very high repair costs if something goes wrong. That is what frightens most marginal people away.

John! What a way to burn up your "fifteen minutes of fame", great article...I'm a subscriber...girlfriend got me a subscription for Christmas!

I got my issue three days ago, actually sat down in the stairwell for a VERY silent 20 minutes or so while I read the 964 articles w/you and Phil in them...great read. My girlfriend and dog thought something was definitely wrong with me as I NEVER sit down, silently, for more than 30 seconds!

I have no negative opinions regarding the article or cover headlines...actually I kind of like the idea that the magazine has that "independent" look and read to it...reminds you that actual people write these mags.

I like "real world" stories such as what Phil went through to obtain his 964. Some of the more produced/edited magazines are way too refined, sometimes shading the truth and feel of a good story.

I'm not mega rich, nor am I suggesting that only the mega rich should be 'allowed' into the 'club'. But, I think it devalues the brand if the focus is on how cheap it can be to buy a car. That's all. I think the article on the practicalities of finding a car in Europe, getting there, bringing it back and sorting the paperwork was great - actually well researched, well presented journalism which will be of great use to anyone who has contemplated buying a LHD car. I just think the EXTRA LARGE FONT headline exclaiming the ease at which you can buy a 'car like this one' for under £13k is a bit tacky. It reminded me of tabloid newspapers!!

Cool

I think you've missed the point - or have I?

The headline said "If we can...C4 - 13k...then so can you" and, as the magazine is bought by many aspiring Porsche addicts, this is big news.

I was hyper-excited when I found out that the C4 here in Germany cost me less to tax and insure than my Toyota Carina was costing me in Ireland. If I had know this before I'd have moved to Germany years ago !!!

I think the Brand can survive - particularly as contacts in Porsche tell me (unproven gossip, but nice) that the majority of people who buy a Porsche, trade up to a newer Porsche when they can.

We should ask 911 and Porsche world to do an article on the bloody expensive Porsche Bikes, as an alternative to the "worn out 924", for a first Porsche.

Keep the faith

Hi Guys

I have skipped through the article, have yet to get time to read in details, But didnt someone go over and trawl through a number of second hand porsche's and on returning to UK mention that there was a good example for sale.

If you added the cost of this guys trip on top of the cars price, hmmmm. Also no PPI. Joe bloggs of the street may find it a little more difficult and with experience i would say that 4 out of 5 964's for sale in germany under 13k have either high milage, dodgy service records, odd colour cobinations or on a second engine.

Just my 2 p worth.
