Talking 964 REACTIONS

I went out tonight to a sporting event, when I was going back to my car a young man said to his father "Is that a Porsche?" I said "Yes, its mine." He was very impressed and later approached my car and said "It's very shiny".
Later, I was driving and at a stop light this girl (mid 20's) was on the pavement near a cafe with a guy, & to my surprise she turned away laughing and bent over. The man with her said "I'll swap my wife for your car". It was a joke but these 2 reactions were extraordinary. I never had these type of reactions in my Mercedes. Has anyone else had any remarkable reactions from simply driving their 964?

Not quite that dramatic/funny, but similar. The most frequent comment I hear is "nice car" and they are astonished to learn it is almost 12 years old.

Stephen, I think the reaction may be more extreme where these cars are relatively rare i.e. the Antipodes.

In my brief time driving my Turbo 3.6 around New Zealand I've had some interesting reactions. Ok, so no one offered to swap their wife for the car, but I thought I'd relay my experiences, as it's a positive point of 964 ownership. People love the classic 911 shape..that's why it will always be classic (I actually expected to have more people spitting at the car than being interested in it).

* I parked outside a bank and came back to find three people loitering around the car. One of them looked a bit dodgy (Maori with a tattoo around the mouth). I gave up waiting for them to disappear and went over to the car. Turned out a relative had had a Carerra and he wanted to know which model this was!

* Parked in a country town to let my pregnant wife have a toilet stop; suddenly heard young girls screaming and running down the road with one saying over and over "it's sooo cool". My five-year old son in the back seat was completely confsed. The girls had no idea what the car was and only got to read the back script "Turbo 3.6"; they're probably still wondering what marque it was.

* My father drove the car back from the mechanics one time and said he knows what cops feel like. I asked why and he said he stuck to the speed limit and not one person overtook him.

Other personal encounters were all positive, but it does get a bit tiresome answering the same questions over and over again. I thought of putting a little data panel on the rear window with the vital stats, to save time, but my wife thought that was naff so I didn't bother.

BTW: I did some calculations as to how much my car would cost to import into Australia (just in case I was transferred there for work). I just about had a heart attack; A$36,000 of tax on a car that cost A$87,000 in New Zealand. No wonder Porsche's are rare in Oz.

Stephen: The key question is, How good looking was the wife? Also, can you afford the lawyer for the divorce when YOUR wife finds out?

Less flattering encounter: Stopped at a filling station and a 5-6 boy comes running out, and asks "gee Mister is that a slug-bug?" (slang reference to a VW Beetle)

I would say there is a reasonable amount of Porsches in Australia but the 964 is probably the least prevelant as there was an economic downturn in Australia in the early 90's. Then the 964 style is a great combination of the old and modern styling so it may well arouse new car and earlier enthusiasts.
Anyway, I forgot to say that earlier in the day I was driving past a velodrome and about 1/2 dozen teenagers were looking at my car as I went past (I wasn't sure why, did they know me, or was there something wrong?), then when I turned around to park, they began worship style bowing towards my car. It's embarassing.
I'd like to think that I can have both a nice car and an attractive girlfriend and that they compliment each other, so there's no way I would trade one for the other.
I've found some indiginous New Zealanders to look quite fearsome, but I've found that they are generally very decent people if you treat them with the respect that you would treat anyone else. I fact I find New Zealanders by and large extremely decent people.

Here's a couple of my 911 stories...

My previous 911 that I owned befor my current '90 964 was a Guards Red '86 Carrera. My 964 is Baltic Blue, and doesn't get nearly as many looks as my previous 911. It almost seems the newer body style takes me out of the "car guy" catagory and puts me in the "snob with a Porsche" catagory (which hopefully isn't true!). But I'm invisible in this blue 911 vs. the red one I had.

Anyway, on Saturday afternoon a few years ago, I was driving my '86 down one of our 3 lane highways minding my own business. I was in the center lane keeping up with traffic. I noticed that an average condition early 90's Chevy Beretta was in the right lane, planted in my blind spot. This car wouldn't pass or drop back no matter how much I changed speeds. This went on for probably 3-4 miles. I was getting kind of annoyed (pissed) with this car because I couldn't see it in my mirrors very well. Finally the car sped up and got along side of me. I was expecting some hick to give me a sneer or other gesture. I glanced over and did a double take because driving the Beretta was one of the most beautiful brunettes I've seen. She mouthed "I Love Your Car" and was smiling ear to ear. My exit was coming up and I watched her looking back out of her car to watch my car (certainly not me!) go up the off ramp to the side street. Since I'm the typical dork accountant, that was cool...

I took my 964 to work shortly after I got it two years ago. Some people were kinda irritated with me because they were wondering how I could afford a new Porsche. More suprised looks when I told them it was 10 years old (at that time).

I had to get my home inspected by the gas company a while back and the inspector saw my 911 parked in the garage. "Man, it must be nice to have a car that is worth more than your house" was the comment he made. He then stated, "What's that thing worth, $70-80,000 dollars?" Yeah right, I wish...

At car shows people sure seem to know about the SC's, Carrera's and 993's. I always get lots of questions about my 964 since there are so few of them. It seems only the real enthusiasts know the scoop on the 964.

I'd go further and say most people of any nationality are decent, if given due respect.

I've lived and worked in Vanuatu for the last nine years, and with Melanesians making up 98% of the population,I wouldn't have lasted this long if I couldn't apply that rule to my everyday life.

On another point, some Australian magazines state that 15 Turbo 3.6s were imported into Australia. Have you seen any advertised for sale? I'd be interested to see what the price difference is.

John
I haven't seen any 3.6 Turbo's for sale in the last 6 months (which is about how long I've been looking as I got my 964 in October).
But I have seen a couple of 964 Turbos (3.3 I think) for around AUD$120,000=US$60,000 with about 60,000 kms.

Cool

Hello guys and Melissa,

Most people in the Netherlands like the 964 Porsches, but sometimes people joke with terms like "nice updated Beetle"
or 'stamped Beetle'.
The Nethelands is a country where people who drive Porsches and Ferrari's or other exclusieve cars are soon convicted as 'Where does he/she pay that car from' or 'there must be something wrong with that person'.
People overhere worry to much about other persons money.

People like the cars very much or not at all, there is no inbetween.

Bye Bye,

Absolutely. That's probably why you see so many 911's in dark colors over here.

The nicest reaction I had so far was in a little tourist town. A German family walks on the other side of a rather large parking lot, and a little boy runs over to my car, enthousiastically pointing to it, and shouting "Guck mal Papa, ein Porsche!" [Look daddy, a Porsche!]

Interesting discussion this.

I found that I received more interest in my previous car than this one.

My previous car was a low mileage silver (the best colour)1977 Carrera 3.0 coupe, completely original and unrestored without spoilers but with gorgeous fuchs wheels. People could not believe the condition and that such a modern looking car was nearly 25 years old.

The dissapointment with my current RS is that for a quite rare and so say special Porsche it looks so ordinary, Porsche changed that with the 993 RS which to my eyes is one of the most beautiful cars ever made.

When I bought mine my neighbour, admittedly not a car nut, thought it was brand new! I think your average person has difficulty discerning the difference, in age terms, of 964, 993 & 996.

What about adverse reactions?

Last weekend, driving to see my folks in Shropshire, England, I had been quietly minding my own business on the motorway when three yobs in a beat-up Ford Escort came up behind me v. fast. I pulled into the other lane, to let them past, and they did - throwing a glass bottle out of the window onto my bonnet - major scratches and a big dent.

They then came off the motorway, so I followed them - quite a way back - but eventually lost them when they went down a one-way street the wrong way. Needless to say, the police were less than interested!

Most reactions to the car are positive and enjoyable, but it's the odd one that makes me hesitant to say everyone likes the car!
