Yep, that sounds like a more typical UK reaction....

I once took my 928 to a customer's site (it was a long motorway journey so I wanted something that would cruise well) and you should have seen the look on the guy's face as I approached the door. It looked like he wasn't going to let me in.

Then I had a 993 that was vandalised.

As I mentioned before in another topic I had a Lotus Elan that people would spit in.

Those seem to be typical UK reactions. But I guess they are one of many symptoms of the deteriorating society that England is now. And the fact that we are brought up to despise show offs and overt displays of success - which has the unfortunate side effect of teaching us to resent success itself.

Yobs would rather vandalise things than get off their fat a$$es and earn their own.

Just my humble opinion, given when in a bad mood.

But what does make me laugh is when you see car drivers in their brand new beamers and mercs, looking enviously at a 10-year old 964 than costs a fraction of their car! People just assume a Porsche is expensive, when it's cheaper (13k for a 1990 LHD) than many "hotrods" on the road today!

Yeah, it's funny isn't it. I once bought an immaculate, gorgeous LHD 928GTS for £26K - I mean it was *perfect*. How many repmobiles cost less than that??

BTW my comments earlier relate primarily to the South of England - I don't have a lot of experience in other parts. Someone tell me they're better... and I'll consider moving.

Just as many of you have intimated, I have had several people comment on how new my car looks. I have the stories of the cute girl in the next car as well, but my favorite story is football (not soccer, mind you) related...
I was at a coffee shop with my wife when an old friend walked in. I hadn't seen him since I purchased my 1990 C4 Cab, and I had a Celica prior to the P-Car. He lived in the apartment above me when I first moved to Boston, from Buffalo.
At any rate, he asked if I saw the new Posrche down the street with the Buffalo Bills license plate frame, and he wondered if one of the players was in one of the near-by shops.
You should have seen the look on his face when I told him that it was my car!

After reading all these stories over the past week I thought that I haven't had any thing like that happen. THen low and behold I'm at Home Depot (of all places) and I come outside and 2 teenage girls are loitering around THE CAR. As soon as they realize it's mine they say "nice car". I tell them thanks. Not 20 seconds later, before I even get it started and out of the parking spot a gal and her husband/boy friend walk by (I had the top down so I could hear them) and she says, "Wow look at that car".

Makes you feel good.

Seattle, ..... is a place that has created many Millionaire$. Its local folklore here that Bill Gates has one of the first 959's and it's not legal in the States. You folks may have heard of "Microsoft Million$" = 26 year old geeks in Million $$$ homes.

Anyway - I ain't one of em'!

But even here in "Gatesville", amoung the new Ferraris, Lambos, and of course the $100,000 Black and Chrome "Humves", my old Purple-Porsche still draws the looks. I like looking out at it in a restaurant parking lot, and noting how many folks walk over to take a peek on the way in.

Best comment ... "Is that a custom paint color?" <img src="graemlins/bigok.gif" border="0" alt="[thumbsup]" />

Jack
The "Purple Porsche" colour is certainly eye catching. I think its about the only car in which purple really works.
A friend of mine who has a 993 says that people look at Porshsces and seek communication with Porsche (in particular 964) drivers to "validate" their presence and existence.
Maybe people just like to be acknowledged by what the perceive to be "important and relevant" people.
So I guess that what one may say is that Porches (particularly 964's) and their drivers really compliment each other to produce a class act.
I'm sorry, maybe I've gone too far, but the psychology is interesting.

When I first bought my 1989 944 Turbo S in bright red, I took it to an upscale mall here in Vancouver called Oakridge Mall. I had just turned 21 and looked like 18. A very old lady in a Mercedes Benz got out of the car that I had just parked next to.

She was obviously of the "old money" type as she had her nose very high up in the air. Upon coming out of my car, she is staring at my car with her eye daggers.

Before I've had a chance to escape into the mall, she blurts out very loudly and clearly, "the drug business must be doing well".

I was so shocked, I didn't even know what to say, I just stood there and tried to comprehend what this old hag had said. In the end, I just walked away without saying anything because I could not say what I really wanted; I have too much respect for our elders to do that.

In the 911 Turbo, I get a lot of "nice car" comments, a lot of questions about HP and speed and tons of harrassment at work. It always sucks to drive a nicer car than your boss

If you get a chance, drive a regular car once in a while, the feeling of freedom is awesome. For once, you get to do the staring instead of being the one stared at. You are invisible on the road and it makes things a lot nicer.

I now live in an area called Yaletown, kind of a yuppy area. There are so many nice cars around here (one young dot-com guy has seven cars including two late model 911 Turbos, an ML55, an S60, a Vantage DB7 and a Vanquish just added to his collection. His parks the DB7 outside since his seven spots are taken up by other cars! His favourite car is his 993 Cab) that my car doesn't attract as much negative attention as it does positive attention.

I purposely chose the dark blue to try and attract less attention, it seems to work to some extent.

I know what you mean about driving a "regular car". I do it all the time. I'm in construction and wouldn't DARE drive my baby to a jobsite. It's nice to just go unnoticed most of the time. However, it is nice on the weekends to get out and be "visible".

I took my car back after 1 1/2 month of bodywork repair ( tail damage ). During this period I drove a FWD Alfa 166 and I lost sensisbility on right foot. This was the result : while turning left at a traffic light on wet road I performed a perfect 180 degrees, fortunately without hitting anything.

I got an applause from people in a nearby shop and now my 964 is very popular in town! However I'll take some exercise in counter-steering.
