Post 964 Wheel Spacers?

has anyone added wheel spacers to their ride? if so, what size? and did you notice a harsher ride for the adjustment? and was it even more tractable around the corners?

keep on rocking!

Scott,

I've experimented with 1/4 inch spacers on my C2 for autocross purposes. When driving at the limit, spacers in front can marginally help dial out some of the severe understeer that 911's are known for at low speeds.

For around town driving, I honestly don't see any point in adding spacers but it shouldn't affect the ride quality at all. If you use spacers greater than 1/4 inch, you either have to install longer wheel studs or use spacers that have built in studs, which are pretty expensive.

What are you trying to accomplish? Perhaps I (or someone else) can suggest something.

I put 21mm spacers on the back of my 1991 C4 when I added Cup wheels with 70mm offset. It seemed to handle better, but I think it actually only looks better.

Shaker, you would have had to use 20mm spacers to make those wheels fit - they would have rubbed on the rear oil line otherwise - those were not for looks!

Most people would use longer studs if you use anything bigger than 5-6mm spacers.

Dear Scott,
Porsche approve the use of up to 17 mm rear spacers with 55mm offset rear wheels on the 964. I have experimented with 15 mm rear spacers on my C4. They had a negative effective on handling. The C2 and C4 were designed to have a slightly wider front track than rear. I have found if you extend the rear track too far on a C4 (I cannot comment on a C2) that the handling is negatively affected and I certainly did not like it. I run 15 mm spacers with my 16 inch 70 mm offset rear wheels for winter only. This maintains the original rear track.
Ciao,

PS: I also recommend you check with local regulatory authorities on this subject as well. The rules from nation to nation vary. Here in Switzerland the largest rear spacers allowed is 20 mm. A colleague of mine and fellow rennlister was pulled over and booked for using 25 mm rear spacers on his C2.

Christer,

The cup wheels look better, psychologically the car seems faster!

I use 15 mm spacers with built in studs all around to keep the stock condition between front and rear. I feel that the car is more stable on the track and can't see any disadvantages on the street. As a bonus it also looks better when the wheels fills out the wheel arches. I have Cup 1 rims 7,5 and 9/17.

I also have 21mm spacers at the back.
The car has also the sports supention M030 with 17" wheels and it all makes the car looking much more agressive. On handling I cannot really comment as I do not have any comparison material but it handles fine as far as I can tell.

Adrian, You wrote Porsche approve the use of up to 17 mm rear spacers with 55mm offset rear wheels on the 964.
I use 18 mm in the back, on the org. cup-wheels C2-1992, the spacers are the type org. with built in studs. This was approved by TüV and according to the P center I was in contact with at the time 18 mm is the max approved!?? Where did You get the info 17 mm max? I have driven both with and without spacers and I have no feeling for if it is better or not, the notice I do is that the 964 RS has wider wheelbase both back and front.

On a lowered car rs+10mm, has anyone tried mounting wheel spacer adapters of 15mm both front and rear on oem cup 1 wheels 7x8 with michelin ps2 in 205 front and 255 rear?

Thanks
