Question 964 Oil Change

Recently bought a '92 Carrera Tip and had the Engine removed and reconned by the Local Porsche dealers at a cost of about $4K.Runs like a watch.Dealer advises oil-change every 5000km which strikes me as a tad frequent, and at $200 a pop a tad pricey as well. The car does about 300km a week on (mostly) fast roads,i.e. not in heavy traffic.Any advice?

5000km is on the low side, given that the factory recommend an oil change every 20,000km. It's not like it hurts to change the oil more often, though. $200 a pop? Well, the last oil filter I bought (a proper Porsche OE one) cost me a little over $5, and oil isn't exactly spendy - sounds like a good candidate for DIY...

$200 for an oil change! And I couldn't help notice that you are from Kuwait. I thought oil would just come out of a spigot for free over there!
Yes, its a perfect do it yourself job. Good Luck! Jeff

I'll change oil all day long for only $179.95! Will throw in a new air freshener to boot!

Under normal driving conditions, I think an oil change every 5000km (3000 miles) is unnecessary. You drive about 15,600km (9360 miles) a year, mostly in low stress conditions, so I think I'd be comfortable changing oil once a year. I'd certainly be able to go at least 10,000km between changes, but it's a matter of your own personal psychological comfort. Do whatever keeps you from worrying about it.
