Post Help needed .. removing the front windscreen

Hello P lovers,

Here' s the situation.

Ive got a small rust bubble just at the edge of the front windscreen rubber (close to the wiper). A little problem that I prefer to be fixed rather sooner than later.

My windscreen has got to come out to do the job properly. They can not garantuee that they will be able to re-use my windscreen (which is still in good shape) as it might brake during the process of removing it. The price of a new one would be aprox 1.000$ ... ouch. ...

Of course some will say to recover the windscreen cost on the insurance ... I wish ... I am not covered for this kind of damage. Not that I do not want to but the insurance companies over here do not want to insure me for small damages for my 12 year old 964.

Ive been checking along for prices , including a new windscreen for several months now and I get always the same answer... windscreen will probably need to be replaced too, price new one aprox 1.000$

Yesterday I contacted yet another independant P garage and he told me positive news. He said that there was one way to save the windscreen by cutting through the rubber(s) and removing the windscreen and rubber(s)simultaniously !

The only extra cost would be new rubber(s) but only at a fraction of the cost of a new windscreen. He aslo told me that if in case the windscreen pops that a new one would only cost me 400$ !

I was more than delighted but can I trust this method ? And what about the price of the new windscreen ?

To all many thanks ......

WSP,

Here in the UK thats exactly what they do, they cut out the seal and get the old screen out like that. However, I don't know what the certainity of getting not breaking it is (there is always the chance).

Good luck, its a difficult job and it must be done properly. Make sure they use an original seal.

Best regards,

WSP, I just cut my windshield out, it's quite the job if it has never been out as the factory squirts quite a bit of goo in between the gasket and the frame for the windshield.

In ALL cases, I think it would be necessary to cut the gasket up to remove the windshield successfully.

Good luck on your repairs, make sure you order a new windshield gasket IN ADVANCE!

you can cut out the seal and the remove the windshield, normally without breaking. i just did this on my 59' 356 because the seals were so old and brittal. it is better to lose the seal (and you should replace it anyway when ever you take it out). on my 964 i did not do this and broke the windshield on removal.
a replacement should only cost 500.00 (US) at least that is what i paid in the seattle area.
re-install with a new seal and you ready to go.

Park the car in Liverpool. Pop into pub for a pint. Windscreen will be out within minutes....unfortunatley so will wheels, CD player, etc....
