Default thermostat opening late ???

hi, my car has been running hot , i noticed that the thermostat (fender test) doesnt open until 9:30. i know its supposed to at 8. now is my thermostat going bad, or somethin else. iam assuming there is some kind of sensor that would feed the termostat info to open?
thanks in advance

That was how mine behaved before it failed. It began to open at higher temperatures until finally it just closed and never opened. I didn't realise it was happening since I was new to the car and it was spring, I thought maybe that was just the way it worked in the warmer temps.

IIRC, there's no sensor - I think maybe a bimetallic strip-like arrangement in the thermostat itself? I could be wrong...

is that right?? well sometimes the car would run really cold, which tells me that the thermostat opened in time, but most of the time the temp is at 9.
i guess i may have to replace it in the near future.
thanks

I remember somebody saying there could be something in the thermostat (grit, grunge, whatever) hanging up its opening - an intermittent problem could mean it just needs cleaning? For it to run at 9 o'clock doesn't sound unreasonable for Miami - but if the thermostat doesn't open until 9, I'd wonder...

Mine runs the same as yours in this hot Fla weather especially if I get caught in any traffic. 9:30 is the highest it ever goes tho. Mine opens before 9 I think then goes below 8.
You can get a new inner part I have read and just replace that.

I recall being told a long time ago that the way to test a thermostat is to take it out, place it in a pan of water and put it on the stove w/ a thermometer. When the temp goes up as the water gets hot you can see it open and thus determine the opening temp.

This suggests that there is no sensor to open the thermostat. It opens on its own via some temp.

Seems to me like its going bad.

Cheers,
Dave

That will only work if the valve is supposed to open at 212 F or 100 C as the water will never get hotter than that.

Yeah, I thought of mentioning that, but my point was more to the question of "how does it open". But thanks for the clarification.

OT: By the way, how do I set a signature?

I figured you'd know that.

I'm not sure you have an oil temp problem .
The temp gauge isn't calibrated , so we do not know what the real temp is .
It could read high or low in comparison to another car .
Until you test the gauge by reading the oil temp on another thermometer ...
If the thermostat opens and closes it is still working somewhat .

dfinnegans test will work well if you use oil in place of the water .

A meter gives the most accurate misinformation available .
Never blindly put your trust in any uncalibrated meter .
