I was try to diagnose a problem and put my spare in. It didn't solve the problem and the spare failed about 2 hours later in a parking lot. Put the original back in and have be golden ever since.

Mine failed at CMP also! Turn 12 at the PCA race last year. Hey! Maybe it's NOT a DME relay problem! Maybe it's a CMP problem!
Actually, mine's failed twice in 4 years. The 1st time, I was leading a race at Rockingham for the 1st time ever! 5 laps to go, and my DME dies, leaving me stranded. I have 2 spares now...NS!!

Mine failed during an autocross. Took it out and tapped it a few times, put it back in and made it home. Carry a spare ever since, but fortunately no problems.

Died in the 993 sitting on the grid as we were being waved onto the track. Hopped out and ran to my stuff in the paddock, popped in the new one, and she fired right up.

This was day 1 of a 3 day weekend for my Dad and me, so having the spare saved the weekend.

Thanks Rennlist,

Skip

I just replaced the "DME" relay on my vanagon .
Or I just replaced the relay that does the same job as the DME relay on my aircooled 82 vanagon .
Happy Happy Joy Joy !!!

I posted in this thread before about my C4. Now I'm posting about my RSA. The car just wouldn't start one morning and it was because of the fried DME relay. I have a new one in, I also bought a spare AND made a little bypass jumper wire just in case both DMEs fail

A year ago I was in 2nd gear on a busy street, accelerating hard, when the engine simply stopped (+ Christmas tree). Quick into neutral and coast safely into a turning bay. The car started right away, so I though it was just an anomaly. It happened again a couple weeks later, so I replaced the DME relay. Never happened again.

I do have a spare but haven't suffered a failure yet. Can someone post a photo or tell me how to locate the DME so I'll be prepared to do a quick swap with no hunting around?

It's in the fuse box (above the fuel tank in the front trunk), row closest to the windshield. I think it's #41 or 43. Says DME on it

Location of DME relay: Open your hood. On the passenger side just below the windshield is the fuse box. Open it up. It has a clamp on the passengers side and hooky clamps on the drivers side and should come completely off. Look inside and you'll see several rectangular looking things. Pull them out and read on the side. One will say "DME" or "DME Relay". I can't remember which. Get that spare. If the car ever just quits or won't start and you haven't taken this advice, jimmy the relay switch or have someone jimmy it while your turning over the starter. Sometimes this will at least get you home.

I think you should try out the spare relay to make sure it works .

Probably a good idea. I bought it from the Porsche dealer about a year and half ago and its been rattling around in my glovebox since.

They do fail. I solder mine up and keep a spare handy. If you look closely you can see where the solder cracks.

Belts and braces, best way!

A spare is a good idea but you never know it will work after rattling about in the glovebox for x years. A jumper will always work and is cheaper so thats all i carry these days.
