Question DME Relay Failure: Fact or Fiction?

Just kidding - actually I know it is a well documented fact that DME relays (especially the 964 p/n's but also the 993 p/n's too) can fail at the most inopportune moments and leave people stranded.

I'm curious how many of us have suffered this......

Mine failed a few months ago, but I had my spare in the car. I wasn't sure if it was the DME relay at first, but I popped the new one in and I was golden. Now I have to get another one for when this one goes. Not that I think it will be soon or anything...

The DME seems to be the first item on the "usual suspect" list. The engine in my Mercedes was hesitating a little, so I changed the DME in my Porsche and it fixed it.

Mine failed when I didn't have a spare, but I carry a spare now! Fortunately, a fellow 964 owner in town loaned me his spare after making the diagnosis.

Mine died back when I had a 924S. I limped home, and only really found out later what the problem was. I've owned 3 Porsches since then and I always now carry a spare.

I would suggest that 964 owners might want to carry a spare starter motor though, as there seems to be a spate of failures of these of late.

Hiya
I was talking with a porsche specialist in honolulu , I mentioned about the dme relay and he shot down the idea that the dme relay could be a problem , could never cause a 964 to run poorly etc etc etc .
When I told him that many people on this list and other lists had problems that were fixed with the replacement of the relay , he dismissed the knowledge .

I carry a spare .

I know I've changed mine twice - but I have a feeling it wasn't the actual problem either time. In fact it can't have been because I now have two spares and definitely would have chucked the broken one away.

It's on my Pelican "project list" but I haven't bought it yet. Probably should; they seem to have saved several people in a pinch.

Carry a spare in each of the cars -- having heard of the problem. Hasn't hit yet but that is what insurance (the spare relay) is for.

Interesting numbers.

So, with a reported 27% of Rennlisters who voted having had a DME relay failure, those 30% of you with no spare might want to reconsider....

I now have a nifty little jumper rig that will ride with me in the tool bag !

(Thanks Rennlist for helping me figure this out before the tow truck arrived.)

I've had both the 964 and 93 relay fail. I made and carry a jumper in both cars. I resoldered the connections on both of them and they work fine. (It worked for the Cab Controller so I thought I would try it here.) Yes, I can afford the $25 for spares, but sometimes the challenge is priceless...... I'll get spares when I get the chance.

Mine failed 400 miles into ownership. Found the jumper wire solution on RL which works great. However, beating the c%$p out of the old relay on the asphalt got me home, 1500 miles later.

I replaced the relay with a NAPA and haven't had any trouble since, but I do carry a spare relay plus the cool jumper wire rig.

Mine failed mid-corner on track at CMP, I now carry a spare all the time.

On my old C4 the DME relay died on a back road by my house. Car started sputtering, lost power, all the idiot lights came on, not pleasant. Good thing I had a spare and it saved the day. I always carry a spare DME relay with me.
