Post Wierd Noise

I asked this on the 964 Turbo forum and got some good suggestions, just wanted to see if anyone here had any input.

When I start my car "Sometimes" I get this high pitched whistle noise. It almost sounds like ... blowing air over a beer or soda bottle (you know it makes kind of a whistling noise but this is louder). The noise will someitmes change it pitch from a louder to a softer noise. This happens most often when I start the car but it also seams to happen at random times, say 20 minutes after I've been driving it will whistle for maybe 20 seconds and then stop. Then again some times it won't do it at all.

My car whistles a wee bit..I always felt it came from the front, and varied depending on my hot/cold heating control. It sounds like the car is turning on a (whistling)cold air blower intermittently to maintain the in car temp.

Then you probably haven't got one. It means have you replaced the 964 Air flow meter (big flap thing behind the air filter) with a mass air flow meter like the 993s have (which I think means big flap is replaced by a bit of wire).

Expensive mod - which is supposed to give improved power but doesn't always seem to.

Ian,
Check the fan belt roller, mine started to 'whistle' mainly on start up for a few minutes. I sprayed a little 'spray grease' into the bearing surface and have had no probs since.

Richard.

Ian,
No, it runs on the main cooling fan belt. Look in the engine bay next to the distributors and you will see the wheel. It's mounted on a spring loaded arm and is used to check that the belts not broken.

Dear Ian,
There has been some help given to you on the Turbo forum. However you then appear here. I have checked your posts. I cannot determine what you own. A 964 Turbo or 964 NA. None of the advice you have here is useful if you own a Turbo and none of the advice (well one actually from Jim) from the 964 turbo forum is useful if you have a 964 NA. Please advise which you have. Peoples time is being wasted otherwise. A turbo has none of the items mentioned above.
Ciao,
Adrian

Dear Ian,
Thanks for the clarification. Turbos do not have air flow sensors and no 964 has a mass air flow sensor unless it was installed after market.

If it at all seems to be coming from behind the dash, try this:

I get a whistling from the area of the HVAC unit if both HVAC sliders are fully closed (not sure if this is 'your' sort of noise).

It can be fixed easily by just moving a slider a little towards the 'open' end of the scale.
