Question AC compressoer & R12

Folks,

Just had the R12 topped up since the AC was not really cooling that well any longer. Topping up with R12 cost a mere $45. The garage told me that the reduced efficiency of the AC was caused by a leak in the compressor but since the leak-rate right now is pretty slow the compressor will only need to get changed if the leak gets worse.

It was also explained to me that there are 2 different compressors from the same parts manufacturer, one stamped with a Porsche part no. and one with the manufaturers own part no. and that the cost for the one without Porsche part no. incl. labour for $ 739 and the one with a Porsche part no. is twice as expensive.

My question is, should I go for the non Porsche compressor, the Porsche part no. compressor, just keep topping up the R12 untill the leak rate increases and isn't there a repair kit for the AC compressors?

Thanks,

Johannes E.

Have a look at the one on offer from Vertex Automotive. They do a modern more efficient compressor and bracket for a very competitive price.

A few years ago, when I was looking at upgrading my a/c system to R134A, I was told the hoses that Porsche used (this was on an 81SC) were permeable and allowed freon to deplete over time. They recommended going to barrier hoses if I was going to upgrade. That may, or may not, be a factor in your depleting freon situation.

9674s also have a habit of leaking from around the connections and hoses around the evaporator. Of course hardest thing to get to. You might also wish to check the condensor. Vented batteries from the early days (very few of us have vented batteries anymore) vented their acid cargo onto the condensor area. Worth checking around this area as well. Mind you as part of the service the mechanic should have pressure tested your complete system.
If you decide to upgrade your compressor I highly recommend you look at the aftermarket systems on the market. I do not often recommend aftermarket systems but the Porsche airconditioning system sucks,

Hi All,

The system was pressure tested and the compressor was found to be at fault so I guess they know what they are doing. I reckon I'll just wait and see how fast the R12 leaks after topping it up. If it's not too bad I might just continue topping up when necessary.

BTW had a remote lock/unlock system fitted that came with a Mercedes type switchblade key. Fitted in less that 1 hour since all cables can be connected to the buttons (central locking & hazard light)in the centre consol. A bargain at approx. $50

Ciao,

Johannes E.

Question

Mr.C4,
Can you give us some more information about your remote locking kit? What brand is it? Where can I get one? Was the kit $50 or was that for the install? Thanks for your help!

Andy,

The remote system with switchblade key came from a company called UNC and looks exactly like the original VW, Audi and Mercedes thing. It is made in Taiwan but who cares at a cost of $50 incl. intallation, can't go wrong at that price! Take in to consideration that labour here in the United Arab Emirates is very cheap! You can find a similar prodict at www.sacacar.com

All you need is a constant power source, ground, hazard lead and central locking lead and it's all in the centre consol and stereo harness!
