The engine pad is falling in pieces... is it worth it to replace it, reglue it, or should I simply remove it and clean the area. Does this pad works as a heat or sound shield??

Jamie:
I believe the primary function of the engine sound pad is for noise reduction.
Once the engine pads are that far deteriorated, it's hard to glue them back in place (and have them stay in place). The best time to replace them is when the engine is out, but maybe another lister will have a suggestion as to the best way to replace them with the engine in.
Since the 964 is rather quiet already, you may just want to cut away as much as you can and clean the area for now.
Good Luck,
Jay

I would go for Jay's suggestion for now, cut away the deteriorated/unattached sections and don't worry about it.
Replacing the "engine sound pad" as it is often referred to would be hell without the engine removed...but it can be done.
The primary purpose for this pad is sound insulation, with a secondary purpose of heat insulation from the interior cabin.
Don't worry, you won't experience any hearing loss or "cook" inside your 964 without it!

Whatever you do, remove it from over the throttle cable. I have heard that this may be a hazard, otherwise. You will not have any luck in gluing it either. I replaced mine with the engine in, and fashioned a "bridge" out of strap Al to support it. Looks good, and painted flat black, looks OE. Replacing is a bit of a chore, but not too bad. If wanted, I can describe the process in some detail.
I think engine insulation is another item we could have added to MikeF's recent "Best and Worst Engineering in the Same Car!" thread.
The insulation on my old '66 was shot, don't remember the condition of my '84's (it was only 8 years old when sold), and my '91's is dying.
I tried glue on my insulation, with mixed results (it is an improvement). I would try Horst's approach, except the hard outer portion of the insulation is crumbing away in some places. So, even if supported properly, it's still missing pieces and won't be pretty.
I've resigned myself to replacing the insulation next time the engine is dropped. I'm somewhat curious what the cost is for the insulation, but I haven't checked yet. Horst .... do you remember what the insulation cost you?

Horst is correct on the price. The last one I bought for my '86 was $75 from Performance Products (less the 20% for the sale).
I do recommend replacing it if the engine does come out. It's pretty easy to do and does look good when there's a new pad in the engine bay.

OK, thanks folks!!
I do not plan to pull out the engine anytime soon (Jaime looking for a large piece of wood to knock with both hands and feet on). So I will remove it and clean the area well.
