Post HP and BHP... the diffs?

Hello

Another question...

What is the difference between Horsepower and Brake Horsepower? Never figured this one out.

Thanks

Hi Kevin,

The non-technical explanation is that bhp stands for Brochure HP. For a technical explanation take a look HERE.

Phew!

John

PS. I see from you spin video that you have too many horses anyway!

Oh Yes...

And how does Kilowatts enter the equation? Is there a correlation, or are they unrelated?

Sorry, but I use these terms all the time to compare cars without really understanding them.

Again, thanks in advance!

Kevin,
Kilowatts is just another unit of power. The conversion from hp to kW is .764kW/hp.

I thought BHP was BRAKE Horsepower as in dynomometer brake, which is the device used to measure the dynamic torque output of an engine. The torque numbers derived are used to calculate horsepower.

Cupcar,

That is what I now understand having read the site John posted. However, I still am not sure if my car is 320 HP, or 320 BHP. And is there a difference?

I think when the manufacturer quotes HP they mean brake horsepower. BHP would be more correct but cumbersome for advertisment speak. There are differences in the conditions that the brake horsepower are determined under. This can mean differences in corrections for temperature, pressure, presense or absense of accessory drives, mufflers etc. so you have to know if HP value is SAE net, SAE gross, DIN etc. and compare apples to apples.
