Angry What's in a name?? Searching for parts on the internet...

Has anyone else experienced the frustration of trying to find parts on the internet for the 964 model. I'm quite annoyed because of the naming convention. Sometimes you find the parts under 911, sometimes 964, sometimes C2/C4, etc. Since the car goes by all these names, you can't rule out any in your search or risk missing what you're looking for. It seems that the 911 through 89 was universally a 911 (in the world of the internet) and a 993 and 996 is fairly accepted. The 964 on the other hand seems to fall into multiple catagories. You end up spending HOURS searching through 33 pages of "hits".

Worse yet, I've been burned more than once getting parts labelled for "all model 911's" that end up not fitting the 964 (e.g. the front hood struts). I even went to one parts source and entered "C2" into the search engine and the only parts I found were items that said "will not fit C2/C4." At least they told me that.

So, has anyone found a good simple clearing house for 964 parts and upgrades that won't confuse the casual user such as myself with XX-89 model 911 parts? I'm no wrench turner and I don't have the part number often. Heck, half the time I don't even know the "official" part name (e.g. is window motor the same thing as window lift motor? Is it called passenger side or right hand side? etc)

Anyone want to chime in to bitch or, better yet, have a solution?

Hi Moose,

I'm afraid the internet isn't a terribly effective tool for finding info. on our cars, let alone parts.

See the recent thread where can I get parts . You can also check out several Rennlist sponsors that sell parts for your car.

In many cases, I use Porsche for parts. Call Kenn at Reeves Porsche in Tampa - he and his staff are hugely knowledgable about Porsche parts, and they discount 20%-30%. With the discount, the Porsche parts are competitive, and sometimes better priced than other vendors, plus they come with the Porsche 2 year warranty.

Others I use are Paragon Products in Houston - Jason's the main man there, and again knowledgable, with top notch customer service. They're online at www.paragon-products.com.

Performance Products is pretty good. They're online at www.performanceproducts.com, and they usually have several 15%-20% off sales a year.

Foreign Intrigue in Maine has a good selection of parts. If you have a friend with a 915 transmission (911 thru 1986), their January sale on Swepco gear oil (and other parts) usually beats everyone hands down. Their site is www.foreignintrigue.com.

Vertex in Miami has a selection of OEM parts, and an online site at www.vertexauto.com. They have a 3% credit card adder and their shipping fees include a handling charge.

Excellence magazine is a good source for vendors selling Porsche parts. You can buy it at Borders or Barnes & Noble, amongst other stores. They don't have a web site. The PCA monthly magazine Panorama is another good source for Porsche parts.

Try www.thepartsbin.com. I just tried it the other day, and prices seem reasonable.

Thanks for the good resources. Still, I wish there was a simple consensus on what to call these cars. Enthusiasts and owners refer to the 964 designator. Most people just call it a 911. Some people add the C2/C4 designator. Am I the only one who is annoyed by this? Especially when you accidentally order a part that fits "all model" 911's only to find that whoever wrote that part description considered 911's only run through the first half of 1989.
