Dear Piers,
Please remember that my comments are based on a modification program using Eibach and Koni suspension parts. I use springs specifically designed for the 964 which are not the pro-kit things. I use Koni struts and shocks specifically built for the 1989 and 1990 model 964s. Many others use different combinations of parts and this accounts for all the different opinions. I followed the original US based testing and mod kit (parts used) to the letter. What you read in the article "Wringing out a Carrera 4" is exactly what I did. This mean´t installing the 21 mm rear sway bar first then driving around. Then installing the rest of the kit.
My C4 is not the same as most others which have been modified. I actually know of no other using the Koni sports suspension system that I have. I am sure they are around and I know a couple of people said they would follow the same path but I am not sure if they ever did.
If you want an independent opinion on my C4 ask John Dunkle.
Ciao,
Adrian

Adrian

My plan was to do the 'sway bar & strut brace' as a 'stage 1' see how it feels etc and then possibly do more at a later date.

Only thing holding me back is that I may sell next year.

Many thanks again!

I wanted to discuss strut braces. Are there any specific benefits realised on the C4 only when installing one of these?

I have been told by more than one company (who sell strut braces!) that there is no point doing this (on my car at least) due to the fact that I do not have mono-ball mounts/joints installed and therefore the effect of the brace is to 'tie together' the 2 towers which are mounted in big rubberbushes/blocks that are able to move a lot on their own anyway. This makes sense to me - and I know C4's do not have the mono-ball mounts either - so what is the benefit?

Dear Christer,
Porsche installed them without monoballs. I have one on my C4 and it definately stiffened up the front end. However I am not going to try and convince you. The only way to see is to try it for yourself.

Thanks Adrian - that's useful. In my case, the suspension itself is a priority. That is, after I get the rust bubble repaired at the base of my rear screen. Going to get a quote tomorrow . Both screens out and roof respray as well.

I will of course provide full before and after photos - perhaps I can even get some 'durings' as well.

Christer,

Do you get wind noise at speeds >120 kmh? It's more noticeable in my car on windy days, but I was wondering if new seals could remedy that. If you could include this topic in your report that would be wonderful.

Joey

To be honest, I don't get any really intrusive wind noise now even at obscene speeds - well at least to my ears it is not too bad. I guess it's subjective.

But, your wish is my command - I will add this to the 'report'!

In fact, a guy called Kevin (username Warmfuzzies) is having some similar work done next week at the very same place that I am going to so he can perhaps also feedback any improvement (or otherwise?!).

Have a good weekend!

Christer,

A strut brace bolts to the mounting points in the body where the strut top mounts also attach. With monoballs, side loadings at the top of the strut transfer directly into the body which is supported by the strut brace. With OEM mounts the rubber gets compressed under the side load so there is movement at the top of the strut which does not occur with monoballs, but the loading into the body is the same and any deflection of the body is controlled by the strut brace, as it is with monoballs.

Upshot is that a strut brace is equally effective at stiffening the shell with or without monoballs, but it cannot eliminate the movement that occurs within the OEM rubber mountings and this is likely to be a lot larger than flexing of the bodyshell, so the benefit of a brace with OEM top mounts would be much smaller.
