Unhappy Small parts needed

I recently had a minor accident, and I've been quoted a silly amount of money (almost $15k) by a body shop to put it right. Basically all that needs to be replaced is the bumper and left-hand fender, so I'm going to be doing as much of the work as possible on my own, with the exception of paintwork. Anyway... as well as the bumper, there're a bunch of small parts I need (like the oil cooler mounting bracket, stuff like that) - where can I get accurate part numbers/pictures of the parts? I'm going to have to be ordering parts, as there's no Porsche garage anywhere near here, and the quote I received doesn't include all the part numbers I need (or very good descriptions of what the corresponding parts are). Is this a case for the PET, and if so, where can I get a copy of the PET from?

Eion,

I believe the PET program is only available to Porsche dealers, if you obtained a copy it would likely be bootleg and illegal (copyright violation).

However, you can find parts diagrams at this site (thanks John Miles) <a href="http://www.msroadrace.com/Table%20of%20contents%20ALL.htm" target="_blank">http://www.msroadrace.com/Table%20of%20contents%20ALL.htm</a> and then call up a Porsche dealer parts department.

In other words, these diagrams are the same as the diagrams in the PET that the guy (gal) in the Porsche dealer parts department will refer to. The difference is that when he clicks on an element in the diagram, the PET will pull up a Porsche part number for the element. So you could view/print the diagrams from the site, call up your favorite Porsche dealer parts department (Bill Gregory has mentioned a number of times that Reeves has great prices), negotiate until you are looking at the same element in the same diagram, and then get the Porsche part number and order the part.

Good luck.

if you get really stuck, I will burn you a copy of the PET on CD for your personal use at no charge OR if you have a permanent connection I may be able to FTP it (its pretty big though, about 96 MB). I expect some of the US Rennlisters will probably be able to help you too. Send me a private e-mail.

I wouldn't lose sleep over the copyright issue, as long as you don't pay anyone for it & they're nopt profiting from bootlegging, don't sweat it.

If all it needs is a front fender and a bumper then it isn't a $15k hit. Are you sure there is not frame damage? Did the air bags go off?
I would suggest you had another estimate done.

It really wasn't major at all - there's no frame damage and neither airbag was deployed (thankfully). Looking at the quote, the major expenses are:
New front bumper cover, $1150 + 4 hours of labour to fit (I can get a fibreglass replacement for $350 and fit it myself in 45 minutes).
New front fender, $1130 + 4.5 hours of labour to fit (I'm undecided whether to replace the one fender with a second-hand one or to replace both with fibreglass and sell the undamaged one) - either way will be cheaper.
Rear engine cover, $1020 + misc. labour - totally unnecessary, the engine cover was undamaged and is totally fine.
New oil cooler, $330 - unnecessary, the oil cooler is fine, all that is needed is a new fan (not even that, just the plastic mounting assembly for the fan).
Steering gear assembly, $1600 - unnecessary, the current one is fine (according to the garage who replaced my tie rod).
New left tie rod (trivial expense, but I can see for myself it's not needed!)
Left and right lower control arms at over $1400 plus 3.4 hours of labour to fit - *blatantly* un-needed.
$500 to refinish two of my wheels. Hmmm. Not really vital, they don't look bad.
Oh, and a complete repainting of the whole car. Normally it might be needed, but the car was repainted very recently (I have the mixture formula for the paint, too), so that's not necessary either.

Anyway, another estimate is out of the question - the car is back home now (a long way from the body shop - it's a long story), and none of the body shops near here have *any* Porsche experience. I'd rather do it myself for free (with the computing jobs market how it is at the moment, I have more time than money) than pay someone who has just as much experience with 911s than I do.

I'm going to have a look at removing the fender today. The front bumper was trivial, the fender looks less trivial. There's also a whole bunch of small random parts I need (like the bit that goes between the rocker panel and the rear wheel arch, the random bits behind the bumper, oil cooler brackety bits, stuff like that) - hence my need for the PET.

I may well take you up on your kind offer, John - I'll mail you... <img src="graemlins/yltype.gif" border="0" alt="[typing]" />

Hi Eion,

I got my "Mickey Mouse" globe out and saw that you're in the next county! Instead of FTP'ing the PET CD from across the water, email your shipping address to:

my911targa@***.net

and I'll burn a copy of it and send it to you.
I live in the land of the Giant Redwoods...sure they're majestic, put they're unforgiving when you rub your car up against them!

He Mojo

I bet that Giant Redwood country is a great place to drive 911s.

I was filming at Mt. Shasta a few years back, but I couldn't get over to see the Sequoias.

I'm planning a big US adventure with wife & kids, strating in Northern Calif, so I may e-mail you next year for some adavice on pleasant places to stay & visit.

Thanks Mojo! I'll mail you instead, probably easier.

I live pretty close to Mt Shasta, only 65 miles or so away... my little accident happened down south though, on (unsurprisingly) Highway 1 (another amazing place to drive 911s, as long as you remember not to come off the accelerator pedal in the middle of a hairpin) - I'd been through the redwoods the day before, happily avoiding all of them
Curiously enough, when it happened, I was taking the scenic route to San Francisco airport to go to (among other places) Leeds. It's a small world...

If the oil cooler shroud/mounting bracket is the same as on a 993, e-mail me as I have one in my garage.

Also - keep an eye out for used parts - there is a set of bumpers and rockers in the Rennlist classifieds right now...

Good Luck!

John H, I've e-mailed you.

Jack - cheers, I had *totally* forgotten to check the classifieds. Stupid me. Those bumpers and rockers look good, but it's too much money for too many parts I don't need (I only need a *tiny* part of the rocker). I'm 95% sure that I'll be replacing the bumper with fibreglass, anyway. I haven't decided one way or the other on the fenders - I haven't been able to remove the damaged one yet. The thing is, while fibreglass ones are much cheaper, I don't know how much a second-hand metal one will cost, with fibreglass the prep costs are much higher (and I'll have to fit one extra fender), but I'll be able to sell the undamaged fender to recover some costs and should I have any more front-end damage, unbolting and reattaching the fender should be relatively easy.
Decisions, decisions...

Thanks, everyone! <img src="graemlins/xyxwave.gif" border="0" alt="[bigbye]" />
