Question Warm engine starting problems . . .

After I take the car ('90 C-4) on a short trip and park it for about fifteen minutes or so, the engine is difficult to re-start. Sometimes it takes several turns of the key(engine cranking but not turning over) before the car actually fires. If it sits for any longer or shorter period of time, it starts right away. Any ideas?

Hot starting problems seem to be rather prevalent on the 964. I had similar problems that went away after changing the transmission ground strap ($15). I've also heard of a corroded fuel pump fuse connection causing hot start problems, as well as a bad oxygen sensor.

When I first had the problems, I took my car to my mechanic and he couldn't figure it out. I took it to the dealer and they diagnosed the problem right away. No problems since then.

Good luck, it's a very frustrating problem.

I noticed the same problem also. Couple of pumps on the throttle was the only way to overcome.

same problem in the past- turned out to be TWO problems 1. faulty head temp sensor (Common in early 964- Porsche updated with a better one) and 2. bad coil. On early DME's, you can sometimes "seet talk" your dealer into sending your DME to Atlanta, where Porsche will install a new PROM FREE!. You can install a check engine light- you have the lens and socket already there- and then you can read out a wealth of trouble codes right there in your comfy garage- that may point you in the right direction. Also consider buying a 993 DME relay. It works better, and the engine seems happier. About $18.00.
