Question Rear sawy bar

Have a 90 C-4, and have seen a previous post re: heftier rear sway bar> mine is stock, I assume 19mm. There was a car, was it a 90 or 91 C-2 that came with a 21mm bar? Which one- I believe that that would be the perfect compromise for me. Like to get a used one if possible (they never wear out) from Oklahoma salvage, or parts heaven or some such. Not sure that I need to go to the 22mm which all the catalogs offer. Opinions/ info, please.

Dear Horst,
All this is in the article I faxed to you. Plus the stuff I have passed onto you already from my own modifications.
The best rear sway bar, tried and tested on the C4 is the 21mm version from the 1990 only C2. The original is 18mm btw.
For road use larger diameter sway bars have been proven to provide no advantage over the 21mm rear.
Do not forget that you must also replace the rubber mountings as well. All part numbers are in the article I sent you,
Ciao,
Adrian

Pardon my ignorance,
But what is a sway bar? How does it help with handling?
Thanks

Okay, I will do my best to b.s. my way thru this one! ...

A sway bar is a bar that reaches across the width of the vehicle, installed on the front and rear of most Porsche vehicles...as well as many others in existance. ***Please note that some Porsches (earlier) came w/no or just a front swaybar, no rear.***

A swaybar enhances the vehicle's handling properties by preventing "body roll"...that is, the weight of the body causing it to roll to the outside of a turn...meaning when you do a hard right, the body tends to roll to the driver's -or- left side.

The "stiffness" of the swaybar, usually dependent upon the thickness of the bar will be the factor that decides how much reduction in "body roll" you will achieve...adjustment will be the factor that decides how your car reacts to the "stiffer" bars.

Adjustable swaybars are the ticket, they can help you "fine tune" oversteer or understeer in high speed turning situations...such as Autocross and Track Events. Having both adjustable front and rear swaybars is very important...especially in an upgrade situation - meaning, if looking to upgrade...replace both! They need to be fairly proportionate in size or "stiffness".

Basically, the sway bars are pretty much your "flexible" link between the body and your suspension.

In my latest research for what bars to buy for my new found "track toy" - I have found that a very popular upgrade is 21mm on the rear and 25.4mm on the front. Thus far, the different opinions I have encountered have suggested leaving them adjusted "midway" or the "3rd hole" on the 5-hole adjustable bars.

You will find most of your factory sway bars are NOT adjustable.

Hopefully this was somewhat helpful...please feel free to "jump in" if I got something backwards - or was just plain WAY OFF!

Adrian, I have copied and accumulated so much stuff from you- which I appreciate- that I have lost track of some of it! Thanks for the reminder. I will look for the rear sway bar from a 90 C-2. As I recall that was the only year for that bar...
