Dear Flynn, I think Tip shifts are so low not only for a fuel economy reason. This is only one of the advantages.

Remember, 2000rpm of a six cylinder engine are equivalent to 3000 rpm of a four cylinder, that is a normal shift point.

And hydraulic converter makes shifts smoother than with a clutch.

Dear Herbie (I loved that Bug on the movie when I was kid!),

I know it's not the only reason but what I've heard, driving around 1300-1500 rpm (that's what I assume the rpms are after the shift) is quite low.

And told by many respectable Porsche mechanics, these engines suffer much more from low rpms than high. I'm not saying you need to redline it when cruising in city but 1500 is low if you want to keep your engine healthy & clean.
