Ouch .. I do not like it ....
Actually Andy it does makes that little 'clac' noise when I accelerate hard and moderate.

Kinda scares me $$$$$$

I'm guilty of cruising in the 30km/hour zones in 5th Gear.

Still as long as you accelerate gently she doesn't complain about driving at 800 rpm in 5th. Just make sure you don't give her enough petrol to make her "lug".

I guess I am seriously perplexed why you would want to cruise around town in 5th gear at 800 rpm? I mean, that's idling speed! My C2 idles at 800 rpm. I cannot think of ANY benefits or advantages of driving a car at engine idling speed. In my mind, the absolute minimum rpm under any conditions is 2k. Even then, I would be well below the torque range and I suspect cooling and oil circulation are at minimal levels too.

As I mentioned previously, I typically shift down when my rpm drops below 2500. These engines were designed to be run at above 5k all day long.

Now, if we were all driving a 996 Taruus, then yes, I would be more cautious about rpms.

I don't even use 4th gear on the highway! Well, I do occasionally, but if I do, I have to watch my speedo like a hawk to stop it from creeping up to the 125-130 mark - that'd be a big-money ticket...

I read in a book I have "How to buy a used porsche 911" that says it can actualy hurt the car if you shift at low RPM's. Whenever I'm driving my car and my dads with me he'll be like "Are you sure your supose to be shifting that high" Hopefully what I read was right.

No wonder ricers think they can beat a 911. They're passing all these guys riding around city streets in 5th gear. I usually keep the rpm needle straight up.

what rpm do I use around town? All of them

As an ex-motorcyclist (and many time 2 stroke owner) I think I keep the revs higher than most people, always looking to keep on the edge of the "power band".

I am sure lugging the engine around town or anywhere for that matter has to be bad.

I take the view that they put the rev limiter in so you know when to shift , heck otherwise they might as well just stick an electric motor in and give you one gear!

Cheers

Haha, that's funny Neil, I echo your sentiments exactly. I am asked often what RPM I shift at while at the track...my reply is usually, "when the rev limiter burbles the engine" - you should see the looks I get!

...also, as I mentioned earlier, and Neil reiterated, if you are/were an avid motorcyclist at any time, you know one of the safety points is to keep it at higher RPMs for safety - the "power band" issue is just an added benefit, but plays right into the fact that you may need to accelerate rapidly to avoid a situation.

I frequently take my engine up to redline, the Porsche flat six was indeed built to withstant high RPMs for long durations and OFTEN.

I build my own engines, and can tell you I've NEVER witnessed any adverse damage by riding around at higher RPMs.

I have, however, witnessed damage to other's engines from overrev by missing a shift or inadvertently downshifting when intending to upshift.

...can you say bent valves SIX times, very fast??

FWIW, my 964, with lightweight (Cup) flywheel makes the previously described "clacking" noise when lugged, it's the gearing in the G-50 box, some 915s do it as well.

DON'T LUG YER BOX!

Don't get me wrong guys, I have the car for the sole purpose of driving it hard and fast.

However, toolin' 'round town at high reves just gets you unwanted attention. Most folk associate noise with speed. When you go past at 50km/hour in fifth (1000rpm)nobody looks, when you do the same in first gear (lots of RPM!!!) they assume you're doing a hundred.

Now when I get out on the autobahn or the slalom track - well I'm with Jeff here - God gave us rev limiters for a reason so let' use 'em.

(Actually Jeff there is another track day on the Hochenheim ring GP track on the 1st February. Should I put your name down...?)

I will usually shift up at about 4000-5000 in normal acceleration and downshift at 2000 or so. It's nice to have the ability to immediately accelerate briskly, and if I'm poking along at 1500 it will require a downshift to speed up. The downside (besides the added noise) is that it eats into my gas mileage, which is so awful that's it's actually embarrasing to talk about.

Have to admit, I hardly ever look at the rev counter in town, but given the huge amount of torque at the low end in these engines, I always find it tempting to laze around in low revs. I also try to make sure I take it up to the red line at least once every outing to "blow it clean". I thought the clunking in the gearbox would only be applicable to single mass flywheel cars, never noticed this on mine...

Cool

Hi,

At 1 4 0 0 Rpm., my 964 has the nicest cruise sound.
With the 'CUP' exhaust is the darkest and nicest sound at 1400 rpm.

This is a rpm to use on low speed, driving thru a city street and where people don't say; look at that fool, maniak.

Test it,

Bye,
Arjan

I normally keep the revs above 2000, anywhere. The important thing is not to lug it in whatever gear you're in.
