Post Tie Rod Boot Cracked

Was informed by mechanic this morning that the boot on one of my tie rod ends is cracked and eventually will need replacement.

I assume that the entire tie rod end must be replaced - - correct?

My C2 has power steering - I don't plan to swap out for manual steering as BillG suggested to me in another thread <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" /> - but I am having HR springs and new shocks installed next week. (decided on the HRs over Eibachs for better turn ins - - thanks JeffC!)

With this set up, does it make any sense to go to turbo tie rod ends, assumeing I need to change the one end with the cracked boot. Or will turbo ends even fit on a C2 with power steering. Am I into the land of deminishing returns and throwing away money? Other than 2 or 3 DEs this year, I do not plan on tracking the car.

As usual, thanks much for your help.

Chuck,

Well be that way! There is only one tie rod end for all 964's, so that's an easy choice. About the only 964 upgrade you have available is to change the "fork" to the Cup/RSR 3.8 part. Each one has different hardness rubber in the joint, with the cup fork being the hardest. This is the 964 equivalent to the pre-89 Turbo tie rods (or as close as it comes...).

Hi Bill,

Just for interest, can you please explain what part of the steering the "Fork" is? - Is this the rubber cushioned universal at the end of the steering rack?

Ade.

So, there's the steering rack (not pictured), the 6mm or 10mm stop washer (square washer pictured) then the "fork". The fork is followed by the tie rod and it's two nuts, and the tie rod end.

Bill, how do the different levels of hardness affect steering? Assume that the harder the rubber, the more precise the steering?? But what then are the downsides of using harder rubber?

Thanks.

Chuck,

I haven't installed mine yet, they're waiting for the garage to warm up. However, on my 911SC, I did install the Turbo tie rods, and the difference was night and day (different construction between stock SC and Turbo tie rods). Every time I turned the wheel I could tell the steering was more precise. I don't know yet if upgrading to the cup forks will have exactly the same affect, as there is power steering to consider. However, I do expect some additional preciseness to the steering. Drawbacks, not aware of any.
