I have known this RS for a long time....indeed I knew it when it was with its first owner. The knucklehead that whacked the car (it was "on loan" by the first owner to this guy) did not do any serious damage. I saw the car straight after the incident.....and was made aware of the fact that the cars chassis remained absolutely true- suspension arm did need replacing however. Car was repaired to absolute top condition....the first owner also happens to own the sole Singapore dealership for Lamborghini, Lotus, Techart and Alfa and has a very well equipped workshop handling all the stuff---and his guys worked on the car which obviously meant a very good repair as they were after all repairing the bosses car!
However, I understand where you are coming from...an accident history always makes one a bit nervous....

My friend had a RHD 993RS; he originally bought it because he wanted a 993, loved track days and figured a rare Porsche would hold its value better than his '89 C4 had.
The real life experience was that it was too valuable to track, very noisy on New Zealand's rough chip road seal, and he ended up not using it much. It is now in the hands of a collector and being "restored" after only 38,000 km of road use. I don't think the car will ever see the track. My friend now hankers after a Ferrari 355. BTW: The car did hold its value.
It may well be just a coincidence, but his selling the RS came not long after a ride in my Turbo 3.6. He's not the kind to say so, but I think he was impressed by the combination of acceleration and comfort that the Turbo gives. Twice he commented when in my car whether I had used full throttle and said, "my car doesn't do this". Post RS sale he tells other people I own a rocketship.
The point of all that its easy to get swept away with the hype, but is it a car that you're going to use as intended? I had a similar problem selecting windsurfers years ago; the fast ones had sharp rails and were hard to turn whereas the opposite applied to wave boards. I bought an all-rounder and have yet to be passed, as it's very rare that you drag race on the water with pleasure sailing, because there are too many variables of wind, waves and traffic. YMMV

Piers,
Not sure if you came across similar information, but according to the fine folks at Flat 6, you're looking at one car which does 0-60 in 5.0 seconds and another which does it in 3.9 ... I guess turbocharging has that affect on a vehicle.
For similar money, I'd go with the 400hp turbo over the 300hp RS any day. Not only is it a better daily driver, but it would also clobber most cars at the track. And if you didn't care for the looks of the Factory tail, you could always slap one of those GT2 body kits on it.
Is there a meaner looking Porsche?

Speaking of GT2s, I was fortunate enough to do a few laps in one today, at Goodwood. What a machine!! I have never been in something which grips quite like it. And the power! It never ran out of breath, I mean ever...
Also, it surely didn't seem like a turbo in respect to turbo lag.
I also went in a GT3, and that was quite nice too, although much more civilised and a bit like playing Gran Turismo but in real life.
So, in the end, my vote still stands. 993RS!

Thanks guys!
Been on hols for 10 days. Planned test drives curtailed by 964 clutch dying on way to test Turbo! Had time to look it over but had to get to JZM. Hoping to test RS tomorrow night, Turbo at weekend.
Christer raises interesting point re. 'fun still to be had with 964'. This is true plus basically I bought 964 badly but have now got it 'sorted'. A part of me feels I want to benefit from fruits of my financial labours!
I think test drives will make up my mind....I'll keep you posted.

you should be able to get into a RHD 993 Turbo for £40 -£45k. I have seen quite a few - one silver with 27k miles was a peach, from JCT for £44k! I would look to get into RHD for the money you have.
For weekend fun, go the TT, for "investment" or serious track day use, go for the RS.

Piers, what is a 993RS going to give you that a 964RS won't? The 964RS's featured in 911&PW were beauties - subtle but devastating. The 993RS is a bit too 'max power' for my taste - all wings and splitrims. These are all looks issues, of course..I wish I was speaking from roadtest experience!!
Bummmer about the clutch - did you have any prior warning?

Tested the 993RS. Long and boring story but could'nt drive it but got driven around by mechanic who looks after it.....scared the life out of me....either it out corners my C4 by a mile or I drive nowhere near the limit of C4....suspect the latter! Not as hard as I thought it would be...fely very tight and 'hewn from a single piece of steel'! PO is into weekend driving hard and having it mechanically perfect but could'nt give a sh*t for cleaning, polishing etc..the car was a dusty, messy tip!! Difficult to see how it would come up after a mega clean.
Not sure if it 'did it' for me. Speed Yellow, LHD, 30K miles, £40K.
Pick up 964 tomorrow AM, test 993TT w/430BHP, take daughters to fun fair and give this all some serious thought!
I'll keep you posted

Fair point re. 964RS V 993RS. Just got April issue of 911&PW and was thinking the same thing!

check out Chucks RUF turbo on offer on
www.pca-gr.de
He asked Herr RUF (Alois to his friends) to value the car and is asking a bit under the figure he was given - so it's interesting.
Unfortunately my pocket money doesn't go that far !!

Was good to put a face to a....er....Rennlist Poster!
D'you know what? I was more thrilled with the transformation to my 964 than I was with the 993TT!!! The clutch is sooo light, the gear change sooo slick...I'm annoyed at what I've been missing for last 18 months!! But it's renewed my love affair with this very expensive to run car....the grin is back!!
I think I'm heading toward keeping C4 WAM for another year?
What are JZ doing to you car?

Piers
PS Good news - I did'nt need new flywheel
Bad news - oil tank is leaking!

Hi,
JZM are putting a Roock Coilover system in. My suspension has gone rock solid over the last 3 months and is driving me nuts. They are also replacing the steering rack with a new one along with Forks and Tierods, replacing the rear rollbar with a 21mm job. Hopefully it will be sorted for a bit and transform the handling.
Glad you're happy with the change in your car, you should keep it, it's a nice looking car.
