fuel pump
Can anybody tell me where the fuel pump is located?
I'm getting an intermittant motor running noise from somewhere around the fuel tank and can think of what else it might be.
Also does the fuel pump run only when the eingine is running or does it run when the key is turned on also. This noise only occurs when the engine is running

there is a metal cover on the floor behind the steering rack from cover, it is secured with 6mm (10mm head bolts), take off the cover and the pump is covered in a heavy rubber isolation sleeve. Once you unbolt another bracket and the wires, the pump can be lowered out.

The pump will run when the DME has power. If you were to bleed the fuel out of the line. As soon as you applied power to the DME, the pump would start.

Dear Bruce,
The fuel pump is supposed to start up within 1 second of turning the ignition key to "ON". It will run until pressure is built up. The fact that you can hear the fuel pump when the engine is running suggests that you may have either a pressure regulator problem or the fuel pump bearing are gone.
However before jumping to replacing items which have not failed, I would suggest a closer look because not far away from the fuel tank are the condeser and oil cooler fans. One of these maybe running all the time. If the airconditioning is engaged the condenser fan will be running all the time at low speed. Noises, especially bad bearings caused noises can be transmitted through a 964 so a up close and personal look is required.

Thanks all;
I believe I have eliminated both of the blowers by checking the vents at the front corners of the car. They seem to runn when they are supposed to but not all the time...I'm not sure if the cooler runs at low speed though.
Just to clarify the access to the fuel pump is through an access panel in the passenger side foot well on the floor.
barring the two fans the fuel pump is the only thing I can think of that would be running

Hi,
Just to clarify, it's not inside the cabin, it's underneath the car.
You will see a metal place with small 6mm fixing bolts, it has a few raised vent holes.
Getting the pump out is a MAJOR pain as the not so fexible hoses are tight around one side of the pump and the pump itself is housed in a rubber mount that only just fits inside the gap. You will need good hose clamps, very good tools and lots and lots of patience.
Good luck.
