Too late. What are the ignition control modules and how do I disconnect them?

The are bolted to the coils (in front and sligtly below). Disconnect the wide plug on the bottom...... There is one for each coil.

Sounds like DME relay to me.

Buy a new DME relay before you do anything expensive, it's just around $40. It's uppgraded to a 993. part number.

My list of likely culprits from highest probability to lowest is:

1. Ignition Wires - found a crack in one, probably leaking & throwing the "christmas tree"
2. DME Relay - I'll order a new one, maybe jump to test
3. Coils - Mine are new, but still could have lost one. Car should still run on one, though.
4. Fried DME
5. Hall Sender
6. ...?

One of my problems is that I don't quite know how to diagnose all of these things. I'm going to proceed with the plug wires since I found a cracked one. I'm hoping Vertex will be honorable and send me a new set since I just bought these a couple of months back. I'll order a DME relay at the same time and replace that for good measure.

I'm a little nervous. The car won't even fire up now. At least yesterday, I could fire it up and it would run very roughly until stalling. Now it just turns over and doesn't fire at all. It seems to sort of want to but then it never really starts. I hope I haven't hosed something else. I'm going to pull all the plug wires again today and just make sure I have them sequenced right.

Order two so you'll have a spare as the 993 models have been known to fail to.

OK, I think I've ruled out the DME relay, and I believe I've narrowed it to either the leaky ignition wire or the coil. When I disconnect the ignition module on the primary coil, the car fires up and runs, albeit a little rough. With that control module connected, it won't start at all. Same behavior if I disconnect the secondary control module and leave the primary connected. The wire with the crack on it is on the primary. The most likely is the plug wires, no? I'll be on the horn to Vertex in the morning bright and early.

When did you change the wires?

I could be wrong about this, but I've known cars to run -- albeit roughly -- with plug wires disconnected, much less with a crack in the insulationin one of 12. So I don't think that's your primary problem. My first instinct was DME relay, although you've now obviously ruled that out. A CEL is usually related to emissions, isn't it? Check the easy things first: Got gas? Obstruction in the fuel filter? And, as you said, check that the plug wires are now wired correctly. That WILL prevent a car from starting. Let us know what you find and good luck.

If thats the case , WTF ?
Um....no, you read it wrong, or I typed it wrong. It only works with the secondary hooked up. Bring in the primary, with or without the secondary, and it won't run. Me thinks the primary has a problem (ground fault) that is shutting down the whole system.

Well, I think it's more than about just a bad wire. I think the computer is perhaps detecting a ground fault and is refusing to run the car. Something is amiss and I'm about 90% certain it's in the ignition somewhere. I really don't think it's DME relay or fuel related. I'm going to put a new one in anyway just to be sure.
