Changing gearbox oil, when??
I looked into my gearbox for the oil status, clean and clear, no burned smell on it. Gear selection it more then perfect, cold and hot.
When do I have to change the gearbox oil, it's nowhere written it should.
Please experts, when it the time to do??

My car is a daily driver and sees about 6-7 track weekends per year. I change the engine oil twice a year and the trans oil once a year. The way I figure it is since I'm already under there doing the engine oil/filters, draining the tranny is an easy add on (especially in comparison to 993 PITA filter changes! <img src="graemlins/cussing.gif" border="0" alt="[grrrrrrr]" /> ). Oil changes are cheap insurance in my book.

For a normal daily driver which is not stressed with track work and using modern full synthetic oils, basically you need not change the oil. I asked the same question of a numberof experienced shops here in Switzerland and got the same answer. They do recommend an oil analysis every 100,000km to check for metal particles in the oil.
However if you track your 964 and get it "Really hot" then you may need to look more closely on the subject.
Please remember that when the service schedules were written, the fluid used were not the same as now.
I did have my fluid tested (I had everything replaced when I purchased the C4) and after 30,000kms it is clean as a whistle, no metal particles or metal concentrations found. I had the diffs done as well, same result. I will next check them when I am on pension,

PS: Please remember that this is what I do. If you are not comfortable with such things then please change your gearbox oil when you see fit.
