Wink Upgrade Project (Part 2)

The H&R coilovers from Gert have arrived at JZ Machtech this morning, and as you know the GHL exhaust is already there. Looks like we are a go for dropping the car off on Saturday, weather conditions permitting. The work should take 3-4 days including the annual service so all should be completed by end of next week. Now where did I put Colin Belton's number...?

The car is also being serviced before the exhaust and suspension is fitted. So far, it looks like another whopper of a service. The items on top of the service cost are:

1. Door Pillar Switch needs replacing

2. Front suspension mounts split and need replacing

3. Oil line from Thermostat to Oil Filter housing is leaking quite badly and needs replacing.

4. N/S front wishbone needs replacing
(O/S is pretty new)

5. Oil Scavenge line is leaking and needs replacing

6. O/S rear camshaft seal is leaking slightly. It was doing it last year as well from memory but as my exhaust is coming off it makes sense to do it now - 3 hours max of labour.

My estimate is £1400+VAT (@17.5%) - have you seen the cost of Porsche OEM oil lines!!!!!!!!!This figure does not include £400 to fit the suspension, corner balance and alignment etc, or the 3-4 hours to fit the GHL exhaust.

Failing that the number of a shrink.

Mind you, once you are in the mood and spending money it is quite easy to get carried away. So definitely do not give me CB's number. At least not until the summer...

The good news about this is that as my car uses 1 litre of oil every 2000 miles or so (maybe a little more) it would seem that a lot of that would be down to seepage, not burning or engine-related. You have got to look at the bright side right? Right?

Christer,

Just immagine how much money you will be able to save now that its not losing any more oil!

Seriously, it does seem like a lot of stuff, ouch. Have you had Jonas fax you a list of what needs doing with relevant prices?

Riccardo

Jonas has gone through things in detail with costs. He has made it clear that not all of the things on the list are life-and-death right now, although the oil scavenge line is apparently leaking enough to be a worry.

The fact is that in this situation with the suspension and exhaust being completely removed, I will save £100's in labour costs compared to if I do it later. For example I do not pay any labour to fit the suspension mounts or front wishbone. I don't have to pay for labour to remove the exhaust in order to replace the oil scavenge line. I guess there might be a little labour involved normally to fit the thermostat to oil filter line but none in this case. The camshaft seal can be got at without paying again to drop the exhaust. So the bottom line is I save money doing it now.

I think the important thing for me is peace of mind. I actually trust JZ Machtech to tell me the things that do need doing and the stuff that could do with being fixed but is not important. Until they abuse that trust, I have no reason to change the way I feel.

I also have a intermittent fault on my lambda sensor apparently. JZM have told me that there are 2 options as I no longer have a CAT: one is to use an altitiude sensor instead which monitors airpressure and is far more responsive than a lambda sensor or to buy a new lambda sensor. The first option is cheaper and they tell me that it is the better option as the sensor is more responsive as well. I don't know enough to form an opinion either way so have gone with their recommendation. Any comments on that?

Soory for loooong post.

p.s. and JZM will also be dismantling my clutch and replacing the noisy bearing which sometimes causes a moaning sound when pulling away from standstill. They fitted the clutch though, so that is at their expense.

The 'before' dyno has been done. JZM rolling road measured the rwhp at 207.1 @ 5578rpm. Max torque was 234.4lb ft @ 4849rpm.

Min ambient temp: 25degC
Max ambient temp: 30degC

Barometric pressure: 1021mb

To me, the HP is a bit low but it has done over 91k miles. Let's see which figures go down after the GHL system has been fitted...

Its not too far down, stock would be about 212 RWHP.

When was the last service? How good are the rotors & caps. WHen were the injectors last cleaned?

My guess is that with new exhaust, minus cat you will flow more air & get more HP & TQ.]

Shall we start a sweepstakes!!

I'm guessing 227 RWHP, 255.5 ft-lb!!

The last service was 12 months ago. The injectors have not been cleaned in the last few years (and won't be this time either). Rotors replaced 12 months ago, not sure about caps.

I think with that guess you will lose. I reckon 211rwhp, 238lbft.

I reckon just the service will get you 2 HP!!

I'm sticking with my 9% increase!!

Good luck.

BTW, my suspension arrives tomorrow!!

Will let you know how it all goes...
...if only I had access to a chassis dyno for a before & after plot....

FWIW I would never get the garage doing the service to do or organise the MOT as well - just tooo tempting for them!

I have had an update from JZ Machtech on this. It seems the basic service has mostly been done, and the suspension is mostly on. However, they have this morning run out of gas bottles for the blowtorch in order to heat my exhaust nuts so they can get them off without breaking them. Someone is picking some more up as we speak. This has in turn delayed the fitting of the new oil pipes and as a result refilling the oil. They 'hope' to finish off before Saturday, and at the moment they are dropping the gearbox and whatnot in order to resolve the moaning sound that has been coming from the clutch (most likely a bearing). That is at their cost though and will keep them busy whilst they sort the other stuff out.

It has got somewhat complicated but there was a lot of work to get through. I guess the 'after' dyno is the last thing to be done so I can see how much power I lose thru the GHL system.

Should know more tomorrow.
