Post Airbag service after 10 years (not your spouse)

Hi.

Most manufacturers, including porsche, recommend you service the airbag after 10 years. What is this service and has anyone done it?

Hi Mike,

My car is also 10 years old. I asked my local Porsche dealer and the cost is about $90 for a routine check of for fault codes.

There won't be any physical check of the airbags. So, I decided not to do it because I had my airbag warning light reset just a few months before that for removal of the steering wheel for alignment. There were no error codes.

Regards,

Is it normal to require an airbag reset when the steering wheel is removed? I would think if the battery was disconnected, etc that you should be able to do this without setting off any codes.

John52; I removed my wheel after battery disconnecting and waiting for 15mins (capacitors discharging?): all right, no fault codes.

Not to be dramatic, but a ten year old air big is a gun powder filled projectile aimed at you. And, after a decade, gun powder has a tendency to become less stable. In short, although I recognize the common sense desire to be thifty, if it were my car, I would change both air bags in their entirety -- no warning light can opine as to the charge. And, even if the cost is $1000 plus, that appears a cheap price to pay for safety and peace of mind.

I remember reading something about how the little explosive "pills" that power the airbag expansion were getting very rare now...
