Please help (childseat)
Please help me. My wife is ready to lose her mind, if I can't figure a way to fit (safely) a child seat in my 1991 911 Cab. It has the factory auto-lock lap belts. I have 3 different seats. Not one seems to fit safely. I need a seat recomendation or do I need to put in a new configuration of belt or belts. If so what kind and how. This is a sore subject, I sold a custom fat boy against my wifes wishs, to get this car. The only saving grace was I sold her on the idea, that we could take our 2 year old daughter with us. Now I can't seem to get a seat mounted...Let me Know. Thanks, BLW

BLW,
I put a Century F1-304 babylove seat [made for the Australasian market] in the back of my '93 Turbo 3.6. This is mentioned in my latest running report on John Miles' web site
As I said in the report, to me the fitment was a flop, because of the lack of space for the kids when a passenger was seated in the front; although it would be fine if it was just a driver and baby.
NB: I used the seat belt mount to attach the tether, because I wasn't prepared to drill holes in the rear bulkhead. That fitment meant that the seat was tethered on a slight angle...no problem I thought. Well, last night my 1-yr old son slipped, hit his chin on the coffee table, and drove a tooth through his tongue; there was blood everywhere for about five minutes, and I think we both went into shock. He's fine now, but I'm a changed man. The point of telling you that is that I now know how guilty I would feel if the little guy was hurt by my shortcut and won't be using the seat again unless I get the tether fitted correctly - do it properly or don't do it at all [that includes using a lap belt - your autolock belt is useless for keeping a seat in place]

Re-reading your post I note you said "safely" so don't take the waving finger personally. Like ex-smokers do, I now feel strongly about others possibly repeating my past error here.
My conclusion after going though the fitment process is that these cars aren't really suited for fullsize baby seats, although fine for older kids or at least those that just need a booster seat. There endeth the sermon for today

Thanks for the concern. No lasting damage to my son, he was back to his normal self pretty quickly afterwards; it was me who had trouble coping with the sight of blood coming out of his mouth.

Britax is the OEM manufacture for Porsche's child seats. I'm using "Britax Starriser Comfy" for my 3 yrs old daughter and she loves it. It fits in the back seats of my '91 C2 Coupe much better than other brands because the width of the child seat can be adjusted. The belts are in better (safer) position because of the way the child seat was designed. You can get more info on their child seats at their web site www.britax.com. I hope this helps!!!

I am in the market for a seat for my tall 6 month-old for my 1990 C4 cab. Baby's R Us has a Century seat with a small base that may fit. The sales guy there offered to try it out in my car before purchase, but I haven't had the P-car with me during a shopping run yet. This seat is $250 - the most expensive seat that they carry. I am not so worried about the expense, but I wonder if I could get a better seat for my car for the same or similar money.
Does anyone know anything about the Recaro Child Seat?
Also, what about a Porcshe seat? Where do I get information on them? There doesn't seem to be anything on Porsche.com about it...
TIA

Hi Jack,
You can find the Porsche child seats at www.performanceproducts.com. I bought the Britax Starriser Comfy instead of the Porsche Zoom (the two are the same) which saved me $100. The Porsche child seat (Porsche Convertible) for your 6 months old is also OEM by Britax. You can find Britax at some babies R Us or online retailers.
I'm not in any ways related or affiliated with Britax, except that I am a very satisfied customer. BTW, the only way that my better-half would have allowed me to buy my P-Car was to find my 3yrs old daughter a child seat that would fit in the back. So I did a lot of research on this subject.

I saw your post re:childseat. I have a 91 C2 cabriolet and am wrestling with the same issue. Does yours have shoulder belts or do you use the starriser comfy with just a lap belt?
In my C2 Cab, it just has lap belts and they seem to pivot quite a bit causing an install to be a bit challenging.

I have shoulder belts in the C2 coupe. And the lap belt section fits just beneath the starriser comfy's armrests. My child seat pivots a bit too, but I've managed to insert a 3/4" foam (a bit bigger than the seat) underneath the child seat which keeps it from pivoting and also prevents scratches to the rear seats.
BTW, my daughter is 42 lbs. so her weight is also keeping the child seat stationary.

Here is a link to a post I made on another forum to resolve the child seat issue.

do you drive with the top down while your kid is in the seat? I have a cab too, and I was wondering if this is practical.
Also - it looks like the Simpson Child Seat has been updated since you bought yours. I wonder if I should try to verify that the new one still has a base that will fit on my backseat. I see that as the initial issue, as our current infant seat (which our 7 month-old has almost outgrown) had a base that was too big for the 964.

The lap belt will keep the baby seat fixed to the normal seat and the tether will hold it to the back of the seat. In theory that gives no room to pivot.

Jack,
The Simpson has changed since I bought mine. I believe Simpson only made the cover-the base was made by Graco or Cosco or something, I'll look at the seat if you'd like to know.
The seat base is just narrow enough to fit in the rear seat and with the replacement seatbelts the child seat fits very tightly. Some of the reclining type seats have a removable base that could be narrow enough to fit. I had one of these before the Simpson for my youngest son and it fit fairly well, but not as good as the Simpson.
If I'm driving around town with the top down, my sons don't mind the wind blowing on them. But when I get over 45mph, it gets real windy back there. I also watch out for smokers that flick their cigs out the window as I've heard these can fly in to the car and cause problems (may be urban legend, though).
I grew up in RI and when I call back home I always hear about how crappy the weather has been so far. Have you had the top down much?
