Post 964 Engine - Rebuild or Exchange?

Hi friends,

I hope to renew my 90 C2 next year (mileage 65000 miles). My mechanic advises that my engine should at least get a top end overhaul...the engine has seen better days and there are oil leaks that need to be fixed etc.

Have 2 alternatives - send engine for full rebuild, or get an exchange unit from the factory. In both cases, there will be a warranty (thought I suspect the exchange unit will have a more comprehensive warranty covering the entire engine).

I think the rebuild will end up less costly, but I really like the idea of the new engine. It seems like a good way to erase any neglect on the part of previous owners.

Any thoughts on pros and cons either way? (one I thought of was that the factory exchange unit will probably have all the necessary updates).

Mike;

Have you priced out a factory remanned engine? The part number is 964 100 964 X, it comes with valve covers and front pulley, does not include flywheel. Cost is $12,486.85, that's from my '99 price list. If you can find a good Pcar mechanic have him rebuild you top end and do the cylinder/piston upgrade. You can also address the issue by installing 935 flame or ni-resist sealing rings. I'd rebuild the rods, install raceware or ARP rodbolts, and cylinder head studs. With these upgrades, your engine will be able to run past 100k.

Chances are that 4 valve cover gaskets (likely just the bottom two actually leak) and both chain housing cam gear large "O" rings and chain cover gaskets and the oil leaks would be cured. That would include a trtiming of the cams to 1.26mm valve lift at #1 overlap. Replace that large "O" ring on the oil temp sensor and the engine oil breather housing gasket too. Maybe $1500 max.

What are the reasons for your mechanic suggesting a top end overhaul? How does the motor run? Is it down on power? Does it burn abnormal amounts of oil? At 65K I find it hard to believe that the motor needs a rebuild. I know, I have heard the stories about the early 3.6s. The leaks could be simple as 964 cab suggests. If you are going to rebuild it, then I would do the whole thing. Call me crazy but it seems silly to only rebuild the top end and leave a bunch of parts with 65K miles on them in the bottom end.

Top end ($4000-ish) versus whole engine rebuild ($10,500-ish).

If that car is running fine and just leaks oil I'd fix the oil leaks and forget about rebuilding anything until the engine demands it.
