Unhappy Sound System ??

I wondered if anyone out there has found a good spot for a couple or maybe even one subwoofer in a cabriolet. I've considered many locations and none seem to be real great for one reason or another. I'm looking for something where noone would even know it was there. Any suggestions? I know the coupe guys throw them on the back shelf. Seems that you can't do that with a cab as that is where the top folds down in to. I'm not some big stereo buff and need the most perfect sound in the world, but, I know how much better the system can sound with a good subwoofer installed. Had (2) in my last P-car and what a difference. BTW, I've seen the thing from audio Innovations (?) and think that it may be a little more than I'm willing to spend. And, wasn't real crazy about seeing the front of the speaker behind the front seat.

Thanks.

slant911,

I happen to have the subwoofer from Car Audio Innovations in my cab, and it's GREAT! It looks like an option the factory would have installed, and the sound is tremendous.

Not sure what color your interior is, but mine is black. With a black speaker on the black subwoofer enclosure, casual observers don't even notice it.

As far as the price goes, I can't help you there. But, with the 964 you can order the subwoofer enclosure for one side of your car, which helps to lower the cost.

Good luck in whatever you decide!

I second Melissa's suggestion, those enclosures that Rod Birch makes look great, especially if you have black carpet...then it will be a perfect match! Also, as she suggested, you can get a "half" enclosure, which goes only on one side...for about half the price.

I happen to use a Kicker 8" bass tube, it's a bass tube with rounded edges and a squared off bottom...it goes back on the shelf quite nicely, is VERY compact, puts out plenty of umph...and will also fit on the floor behind the passenger seat quite well.

Let me know if you want a pic of it, email me personally and I will provide.

Slant, I took some pics tonight as you asked me to via email...I will pull them off my memory card and send them later...currently installing my new sport exhaust!

I did however, try out the subwoofer enclosure on the floor, behind the passenger seat, I thought it was small enough to be cozy down there, but it doesn't fit too well...you would have to move the passenger seat up a bit.

So, my suggestion...would mirror Melissa's - get one side from Audio Innovations and try that, if you need more "umph", get the other half!

Good luck, I will still send the pics.

Ah, here ya go...for all to see. It is just a plain and simple out of the box "Kicker" Bass Tube, 8" - enclosure, I believe is produced for Kicker by Stillwater Designs? I don't think it was much over $100, got it via a trade.

I also have been looking for options for a subwoofer for the car. I have no rear seats..just the storage shelf with storage compartments underneath..was hoping to fine something that would fit in the compartments.

what was in the car when I bought it was an Alpine SBS 254 E..just took up too much space..like the entire shelf so I took it out...any ideas?

I had a similar problem with my RSA, I have the rear storage bins and absolutely abismal sounding door speakers that came with the original "stereo" option. I didn't want to mess up the doors or any of the panels with holes, and big speaker boxes just invite thieves around here. I was not looking for the ricer "boomer" but just to reinforce the low end and add some punch to the sound.

I found a Kenwood self powered 6" active/passive sub. It is small enough that it fits into the rear compartments and has a wired control that can be run under the carpet with a minimum of trouble. It is totally invisible. It rounds out the base and provides a suprising amount of punch. The price was about $250 from crutchfield and it installed in about an hour.

I am very particular about my sound systems and wasn't sure if it would work well enough, I am quite pleased.

Heres a link to a review and some info: http://www.carsound.com/reviews/subs/wOOx.html

J. Richard, I checked out the reviews...and the pic - thanks for sharing! That really seems like a great solution for those looking for a little low-end and "stealthyness".

Glad that you included the link, good job.

As for "Vilhelm", I take it you have the RSA style rear luggage compartment then? Check out my pick, if you want a little more "umph" than the Kenwood would >likely< put out, consider my solution, otherwise I think the Kenwood setup is a great idea...especially being that you can fit it in one of your compartments.

The Kenwood sounds perfect for what Ia m looking for..a little low end "stealthyness" if it will fit in the storage compartment.

Jeff..I had a lot of oomph with my alpine but the price in terms of lost space was just not worth it. I still have the wiring harness for the Alpine in place...I hope it is compatible with the Kenwood.

Actually, I don't have one of those (or a cab) but anyway...

Nobody has mentioned installing a sub in the luggage compartment. Now I know there's not much space there, especially in a C4, even more importantly in a Targa but wouldn't it be possible to install one there? I was considering making a custom box - I have the enclosure dimensions the driver requires - which could be removed if really necessary. It should be possible to fit the targa in too.

Any thoughts on the sound quality you'd get?

Roly

Hello all;

I've posted on similar topics a few times, advocating not using a subwoofer at all. In my case, I just don't want to give up the space back there. I opted for speakers from Diamond Audio. They have an absolutely AWESOME low-mid to high-bass sound and give me plenty of oomph, they slide right in without having to do additional cutting and you don't give up the space.

Having worked as a DJ for 6+ years, I'm quite picky about my sound systems and this was by far the best sound available in my price range. Check out <a href="http://www.diamondaudio.com" target="_blank">www.diamondaudio.com</a> I went with the M651 model that ran me $350 give or take.

Good luck with wahtever choice you make! <img src="graemlins/wave.gif" border="0" alt="[byebye]" />

I hope I am not violating some protocol for posting on the 964 forum (since I own a 911 3.2), but I have the same dilemma for my ’89 Targa. I was considering an underdash system (http://www.moch-1.com/UNDERDASH.htm) which might allow space for sub-woofers yet be largely invisible to probing eyes? It'll have to be small sub-woofers (Focal makes a nice 5"). I recognize this will not work for the 964 crowd, but I wonder if anything under the dash might work?

I second all reccomendations for Car Audio Innovations. I put one of his subwoofers behind the driver's seat, and have the best sounding car in town. He's done his homework on these, has figured out the sound potential for the car, and has it dialed in. I'm sort of tall, so no one would ever fit behind my seat anyway. The feel of bass rattling your seat is incomparable.
Talk to Rod, he's an awesome guy, extremely reputable.
'nuff said.

There is another idea ive seen. A box made to fit on the floor behind the seat. not like Birchs angled box but it sits flush on the floor w/ the sun pointing striaght up. 8" sub inside. Compact box made to fit the lines of the the rear footwell. Then you place the factory carpet or mat over it. It is invisable to everyone except someone trying to sit back there.
