I have one in my 1990 C2, fitted years ago by Tech 9.

Gains about 30bhp and engine is much more torquey.

I highly recommend it.

Hi John

Is there a difference in setup if it is a C4 or a C2?, I already have my motronic modified but I have heard very good things from RUF.

I don't expect there'd be any difference.

I was given the chip on a trial basis, at first. I didn't want to change anything about my (then very original) car and was very sceptical.

What a surprise! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="eek.gif" />

The car felt so much more tractable, ran so smoothly, the fuel consumption (marginally) improved and there's a glorious little final surge in power at about 6000rpm. Reminds me of a VTECH engine for those that are familiar with them. It's great to push hard in each gear waiting for this little extra near the redline. And that's another thing - the redline is moved on a touch, which means you can wring the maximum out of each gear without hitting the limiter. The limiter still operates but just after the redline.

A friend of mine has an unmodified C2. I normally have Paula as a passenger and, even under those circumstances and running my air-con (which my friend doesn't have), I can pull him in with relative ease when we are both 'going for it'. Much to his irritation!

I was so pleased with that chip that it started me down the road of further mods - beware!

Does the RUF chip benefit from modifications of the airbox and/or bypass pipe 1 (cuprohr) and 2?

I have seen chips that are mapped for different configurations on intake exhaust.

What intake/exhaust-mods have you done?

John,

I am also interested in Daniel's questions, and have a couple more to ask;

1. The RUF site shows 2 different Motronic's - "Sport Motronic - R64 618 124 10x" and "Luxury Motronic - R64 618 124 21x" - Which one did you buy ? I am assuming the Sport, although the Luxury is listed as an RS exchange ?

2. Was it a simple swap in and out of the original motronic ?

3. Is any rolling road tunning necessary ?

4. How much was it - I couldn't see the price on the RUF site ?

Thanks,

Andy

Guys,
You must remember that I got it about eight years ago - things may be different now.
I have several other mods on my car - but none affecting the intake, exhaust, or the engine itself.
In my case, there was no 'tuning' done - I just did a rolling-road test as a 'before and after' comparison.
The actual installation is very quick and easy - the unit lives under one of the seats. The cover has to be undone and then the chips are swapped in an instant.
I like the sound of my 964 just as it is (and I don't want to find that a higher noise level makes track-days difficult due to noise regulations), so I haven't done any other engine mods for those reasons.
I remember that, at the time, Tech 9 told me it was a 'modified' Ruf chip. No, I'm not sure either!

+30BHP...are you sure? I had a JZ Machtech chip fitted expecting a maximum of +10BHP. Can one chip be that different from another?

Where is the rpm cut then? in my car I maintained the red line, I heard that in this cars it is important not to excced the 6.800 rpms, how does the car perform at low rpms (traffic, city...)

Most of the chip tuners claim around 10% to 15% power increase to normal aspirated cars, 10 hp sound to me too low, the person that modified my motronic he wasn´t a Porsche real specialist but he made the chips for many track and rally cars here in Spain.

He had two type of preparations the sport in which he maintained the same levels of fuel consumption and what he called the "good" one which he said that the car would use 0,5L to 1L more.

To tell you the truth I haven´t checked that and haven´t gone to a dyno to test it I just did a normal test on a known road and I can say that the car accelerated much faster and felt like if it was a lighter car, also it runs more smooth.

Just a quick reply - don't have time to read properly!

Yep 30bhp is the documented increase shown by rolling road testing.

EVERY part of the rev range performs better than before the chip.

The limiter is now at about 6900rpm - just enough that you can change AT the redline without hitting it.
