Angry Problems using the Power Bleeder. What am I doing wrong?

Okay, so I bought this handy tool, the Power Bleeder from Motive. I hooked it up per the instructions, gave it some pumps and was unable to maintain any air pressure. I clamped the hose leading away from the top of the reservoir (#6 below) but that didn't solve the problem entirely. Any suggestions?
(BTW, these blow up illustrations can be found at MS Road Race.com. Thanks, Bill G, for the tip!)

Oh yeah. I'm using the "dry method" described in one of the Racing posts. Instead of adding fluid to the Power Bleeder, you add it to the reservoir. That's not exactly per the instructions but the air pressure shouldn't be affected, should it?

The reason for this deviation is that it's basically difficult to clean out the bleeder once you pour fluid into it. That's all.

I didn't have to clap anything. I think the 964 don't have any overflow hose. #6 is the hose for the clutch master cylinder.

Test the Power Bleeder unit by plugging the cap end and see if you can develop pressure.

I didn't have to clamp anything to bleed my clutch and brakes.

BTW, you have a C4, don't you have to have the Hammer to properly bleed the brakes?

Hi Joey

Plug the hose from the device and see if it maintains pressure - you only need about 10lbs. If it maintains pressure - hook it up to your resovoir and get the pressure up. If it doesn't maintain pressure you should be able to hear where the pressure is escaping from or try soapy water to detect leaks.

Hope this helps

In a fairly recent post, Adrian Streather commented that a C4 bleed could be done with satisfactory results using a pressure bleeder. A complete system flush, however, would require the use of a Bosch Hammer.

Thanks to both of you for the quick replies. Sounds like I need to give everything a good once over.

I bought a power bleeder that works from air pressure from a tire. My mechanic could not get it to work with my C4, but he liked it so much, he bought it from me for exactly what I paid, and he swears by it. He loves it! But, still no answer on why it doesn't work with the C4.

Joe,
What are you using to clamp the tube? Personally, I taped the tube to protect it from abrasion, and then used vise grips. This tube must be completely blocked or pressure will escape. Using the Motive product, it takes me about 25-30 pumps to get up to ~10psi.

Also, you might try some teflon tape on the threads of your master cylinder.

BTW, good choice using the "dry" technique. Worked like a champ for me, and no messy clean-up of the power bleeder.

Good luck.

I had to clamp off #6 on my C-4. Used needle nose vise grip and it worked fine. I used the "wet" method as I didn't want to run out of fluid. Worked great. Released the pressure by letting off on the vise grip slowly.

Okay, I think I found the problem. After talking to Eric Fischer of Motive and reading your responses, I inspected the box in which the bleeder came packaged and sure enough there was a black rubber washer lying on the bottom. The gasket I presume?

I'll give it another try this weekend. As for clamping off the overflow, I also used a pair of needle nose pliers, but this time, I'll try to be more careful and use some tape on the hose. Good tip, Erick.
