The tip is NOT quite like the F! tip boxes. The Porsche tip is based on a n automatic gearbox, ie, with a torque converter. In fact, if you drive away slowly, you'll notice waht many feel is a "phantom" gearshift while in second - this is the torque converter locking up. The ferrari & BMW tips are based oonb manual transmissions, ie, they still have a clutch which is actuated by hydraulics when you press the shifter.
The tip is faster in 0-60 in auto mode - believe it or not!! - the box automatically shifts up in manual mode from 1st to 2nd at 6100 rpm - but in auto mode it nearly redlines! I don't know why, but it does.
Overall, the tip is great - of all the specialists I've spoken to only one has ever had to have one apart - they are bullet proof!!
Re: buying one, I think all advice from others is on the button, get a PPI done by experienced C2 guys, check the numbers & ring the dealers that did the previous services.
Good luck
Anyway,

Hi All
I have a 92, C2 Tip. My question is this, Has anyone got a tip that uses it for tracking, If so, what are your opinions in regards to the drivability of a tip on a track !
Thanks
Richard

Hey Guys, By "Clutchless" I was referring to the fact that the driver can rest the foot and let the "Box" do the work. The Tip developed from the Porsche 962C Racing "PDK" transmission concepts of the late 80's and first sold in the '90 C2, should not be compared with year 2002 developments in transmission design. 12 years after Porsche introduced the Tip, even the Tip in todays 2002 996 Turbo has advanced significantly [ That may be a better comparison to the new BMW box ]. IMHO the Tip of the early '90s was way ahead of the game, and still today, far superior to most auto boxes available. <img src="graemlins/soapbox.gif" border="0" alt="[soapbox]" />

I've taken my 91 C2 convertible tip to a couple of driving events with The Orange Coast Region here in sunny California. The events per se have been a blast (thanks to Paul Kramer) and I've made a couple of obvservations in tip vs fully auto.
I started the day off going fully auto, with the intention of getting familiar with both the car (my first time at a driving event) and the track. Getting warmer, I switched to tip and felt like I was going faster.
At the end of the day, during the timed sessions, I tried it both ways and ended up going a full second faster on a 60-second course.
Commuting in Southern Californa traffic is a b*** at best, but the tip and the convertible actually makes it quite enjoyable.
Just my two cents worth...

I've had a '90 C2 Tip Targa for the last 18 months here in Singapore. Had a bit of angst over choosing it over a manual, but especially here in Singapore, it is really one of the best decisions I've ever made.
Advice I've been given is that the Tip box is pretty reliable and (in the unlikely event it ever needs taking apart) is relatively easy to get parts and things done to, as it is essentially the same box as used in Tip BMWs, Audi's etc.
