Default GT article on Future Porsche Classics

Finally picked up the month's GT mag on "Future Porsche Classics". First we get told in an editorial that our 964's are not good cars to buy ( no point with 993 prices dropping) but then we're told that the 964 was a stop gap design between the excellent 3.2 and the sublime 993. The 993 is lionized in the mag as the greatest future classic with all of it's massive similiarities to the 964 completely overlooked! It the same article, the 964 is merely the same as a well driven 3.2 but vastly outclassed by the performance of the 993. Cheap 911 motoring but not a classic!

I drove several 993's and 964's and not only was the 993 almost twice the money in many instances, I found it frankly bland compared to the 964. The fact that I could get a decent 964 for less than half what an equivalent 993 cost was just icing on the cake. I like seeing the fender wings, the raw sound, and with 18 Turbo Twist wheels it looks better to mine eyes and closer to it's 911 roots than the 993.

Amen!!

Saw that article too, and I can tell you it's the last time I'm buying that magazine.
The thing that really gets me is that all of the Porsches have their merits, and one of the reasons which I buy a mag is to read about all of them from the point of view of their respect owners / experts. If your thinking about buying any car, purely as an investment, then I think you're better off putting your money in a savings account. Whereas if your buying a car out of passion, you should just go with your feelings and for the model which moves you the most within your budget, and hell to everyone elses opinion !
That article was ill informed and inaccurate, but I don't feel two bad as we now have total 911 and 911 & pw

Take it from someone who knows a little about finance and markets- prices are controlled by supply and demand(not to many 964"s produced/sold) and big money in markets tends to NOT follow the heard(contrarion) so somebodies opinion of what will be a classic is just that, an opinion. Many try to predict the direction of markets/prices/"classics" and very few are right.

Those guys are just trying to come up with something to say while meeting a deadline for some random story. Follow the market for the 964 RS and RSA's. There is plenty of interest in those cars. The 964 was the last to have the classic 911 look. I don't take anything away from the 993, but I prefer the look, style and feel of the 964. I remember the mid 80's. The cars everybody was interested in was the 356 or the 930's. Now 20 years later those cars are still classics, but the long hoods of the early 70's have become the vogue with people paying as much as 250k for a 73 RS, or 60k for a nice 73 S, if you can even find one. The 964's will have their day and we will probably look back and think wow, I could have had one of those RSA's for 35k back in 05.

I've got my 356's for the "classic" investment. But believe me when I say I bought my "wife's" 964 cab C2 for the beauty, performance, comfort, and good price. It is her driver, not our show queen. I try not to get too excited about someone elses' opinion of my cars or dogs. I would buy a C4 coupe in a heart beat if I had another garage slot. It would make a very cool ski car.

I read this magazine for the first time the other day, this very issue [I had never seen it at the Barnes and Noble previously]...I usually get 911&Porsche World, but this one looked good so I got it. I wouldn't worry about what the magazine is guessing at as far as future classics....I think the majority of us drive the Porsches we drive is because for whatever reasons we have, we love them. I could give 2 sh*ts about what some guy in a magazine says about it.

If anything else, let the people have their opinions--I'd like to have a 964 in addition to my 993 someday, and opinions like that make em cheaper for the rest of us to enjoy...

Bottom line is, half of my friends think I'm nuts for having a 993 as my daily [and only] transport, they think I'm crazy for keeping it so clean, they think I'm nuts for paying the insurance that I need to [at least until I turn 25 later this year], my Mom constantly says "why don't you just go buy a Honda instead of wasting money on that stupid car?", my Dad says "that was always my favorite looking 911" [he has had 3 and has an 89 3.2 Turbo look cab now], and people who don't know me give me the look of "look what Daddy bought him" with no clue that I am self-made and bought the damned car because I love Porsches.

F anyone who doesn't respect your car or what you drive, because it's YOUR car and if it's good enough for you and makes you happy to drive it, and you enjoy the return on YOUR investment, who cares?

I think that most of us on the air-cooled boards didn't buy the car for the prestige/"pimp" factor, we bought the cars because we love the car for what it is....

Sorry for the soapbox, but I just really don't care what people think of what I drive, and neither should you--you have a terrific, beautiful car, and no one can tell what will be regarded as "classic" or not anymore than the weatherman can tell you whether it will rain next weekend or not

Your collective reaction is as expected: this is a 964 board and though we all love Porsches, you have a penchant for 964's.

However, from a purely analytical point, they are correct.

The 993 is the last, most beautiful and best built of the "traditional" aircoolers.

I daresay everyone here bought their car after careful consideration, and the decision was more emotional than practical. When you insult someone's emotional choice, they will take it very personally indeed.

I regularly get the pi$$ taken out of my car by a mate who criticises the basic dashboard on the 964, the lack of driver aids, the ugly targa roof arrangement and the lack of boot space. I know he just does it to wind me up, but he wouldn't say it unless he had thought it and it does hurt. It's like saying your girlfriend is ugly.

This is from a guy who drives a Fiat Coupe non-turbo.

Yeah thats so true (previous post).

One thing I wanted to say was that to me what makes a 911 is its front end, particularly the lights. To me the lights are right out there pointing straight down the road. The 964 has this as does the previous years. The 993 is the first year that to me doesnt look quite like I expect a 911 to look.

I have nothing against a 993. I may own one one day. I do like the front end of the 964 a lot more than a 993 though.

I read that the front of the 911 was designed so that the driver could easily see where the front wheels were by looking down the hood at the bulged front fenders/lights......true race car heritage just like the ignition being on the left.
