Hi Folks,
Just wanted to thank you all (especially adrian) for all the great advice I got for my 964. I finally decided to upgrade to a 993 so now I'm selling the 964. But I wanted to take a sec. to thank you all for all the help!
Cheers,
Boris

'Upgrade to a 993'
FWIW I've pondered this recently, this is how I see it. When I bought my 964 12 months ago my budget was £20K so I bought a 964. If my budget had been £30K I would have bought a 993. I've saved enough to consider 'upgrading' to a 993. But I can't convince myself that it's worth selling the 964 adding £10K and buying a 993.
My plan is to save another £15K and then convince myself it's worth upgrading to a 993TT!!
Boris, enjoy the 993 and let us know your views.

I agree. I think a 993 hard top would make a nice daily driver...that is unless I spend the dosh on that RUF conversion............
Oddly enough - and as fine a car as they are - I just canna see me in a 996.

£15K saved already plus save 'another' £15K plus sell 964 for £17K(?) = 993TT value in a years time? Probably hypothetical as school fees are starting to kick in! Having said that we've got some hot 'boy racer' stuff coming out soon!

My views thus far on the upgrade:
1) The 993 ('95) is a much more refined car. It's quiet, it's smooth - it almost feels like a caddilac. Now bear in mind that my 964 is lowered with h&r springs & bilstein shocks. So I'm doing the same to the 993 and I'll have to report back.
2) The steering wheel on the 964 is nicer. I think they got cheap on the 993/996 wheels
3) The 993 is slower!!!! Perhaps it is my butt dyno, but I swear my 964 is faster. Again I have to wait and do some mods to really tell and then measure with the gtech.
4) The 993 seats are a lot nicer!
5) I can upgrade to 18" wheels on the 993. Already bought a set of hollow spoke technology wheels.
Overall I went for the body of the 993 - I just like that body the best out of all the pcars.
That's my 2 cents meanwhile.
If anyone is in the market for a real nice 964 c2 cab. Let me know - I have it on ebay now.

A few months ago, I was thinking of getting a 993. I had some extra $, so why not? Unlike some on this board, I *do* prefer the look of the 993, although my 964 looks great, too.
After driving three 993s, I decided to stick with my 964. I didn't feel that the 993s I drove had anything more than a marginal amount of additional power. With the hassles of selling the 964, the risk of buying a 993 with problems (even if the PPI turned out well), the fact that my 964 has been bomb-proof so far (knock on wood), California's extortionist "sales" tax on used cars, etc., I decided to forget the whole thing and stick with my 964, which I'm thrilled with.

Hi Boris,
You ended up with a a 993 C2 or 4? In hindsight I wonder if I should have gone for the 993 C4 given that my 964 was a C4....
For me, the 964 was a far more raw experience compared with the 993. Everything seemed more busy, somehow more exciting.
However, I think I must be mellowing down, because I absolutely love the 993. Admittedly, the C2 is also a far different driving experience than my 964 C4, it is something that I am finally coming to grips with- it is a truly wonderful drive- though it can still be hair raising in the wet in 2nd gear, I have gone (quite) sideways already on a number of occassions.
I too love the looks of the 993, though I still wish that the financial circumstances could have been different so that I could have kept my beloved 964.
Yoe mention that your 993 is a 1995. I remember reading that pre 1996 993s could not be fitted with 18" rims (though I did so anyway), without a modification to the steering rack. You may want to check this out.
Congrats on the purchase...but if you can, try and keep the 964 as well! The last two generations of the air cooled beasts, what could be better?
Cheers
Harold

One more thing Boris,
Weren't the 18" technology hollow spokes for the twin turbo wide body only? I am worried that you may have some problems fitting the rears to your car given that I assume it is a narrow body car.
You can still get the turbo twist design 18" from Porsche specifically made for the narrow body 993 but these were heavier (not the hollow spoke design that you have).
Cheers

Answers:
1) I got a c2 and not a c4.
2) 18" wheels can be fit on certain '95 993. Depending on the vin #. Mine is ok, but you do need a retrofit brace bar & 4 bolts for the steering rack. Aparently rears no prob, but the fronts need the brace.
3) They did make 18" tech. hollow spoke wheels for the narrow body. It was an option on the 996 to splurge and buy the narrow body wheel.
Cheers,
Boris
