Post steering wheel replacement/air bag danger???

I just can't get used to the BIG steering wheel on my RSA. I think it is time for a new steering wheel.

While I have installed a MOMO steering wheel in my non-airbag P-car (a simple and straight forward project), I am concerned about working with the airbag.

What special proceedures do you need to take working with the airbag and it's removal? How do you get around the airbag fault codes once you removal the air bag? What impact does this have on the passenger side airbag? Are any special tools or parts required? Parts numbers would be a big help.

I have also been given conflicting information regarding a direct bolt on adapter for a MOMO wheel to the steering shaft.I don't want to replace the steering wheel and end up with other problems!

I am sure many of you have already completed this project but I can't find any info in the archive.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Do an archive search on "air bag momo" in the 964 forum. Disconnect the battery and wait 30 minutes (a few more than needed) before working on the airbag.

Bill:

Thanks for the quick reply. Inserting "MOMO" into the search was key.

Time to order some parts.

I'm right in the middle of doing this. I was missing the horn contact piece and tester, so haven't completed the job ... just got them in the mail today, though.

Anyway, to help you along, here are the part numbers:

Steering Wheel Contact 964 652 104 00
Airbag Tester 000 721 951 60

I've already installed the Momo Mod .07 along with hub adapter 7004. Like the posts mention, it's a tight fit with the column collar and you'll need to be very careful if you modify the opening but it's a relatively simple DIY job.

I'm not sure what's driving your decision, but for me it was a matter of reach. At DE's and auto-x, I couldn't whip the wheel around without sitting very upright or loosening my shoulder harness. The Mod .07 has a 1" smaller diameter and is dished approximately 3", i.e. 3" closer to the driver.

Now, I can stay strapped in and whip the wheel all the way around like a rally car driver. It's unbelievably great! Best upgrade ... so far.

Let me know if you have questions. Oh, and here's a recent post of mine about removing the steering wheel.

Joey:

Thanks for the misc parts numbers.

This is the wheel that I installed in my 78 SC http://www.ltbmotorsport.com/mod78.html either way it is an excellent choice. Both wheels are great. The suede is really nice. You want to use driving gloves, otherwise the suede gets nasty.

What are you doing about the passenger air bag?

Let me know how you made out with the surgery!

Good luck.

To Disable airbags and turn off airbag warning lights on a Porsche '90-94 911 (964):

DISCLAIMER:

A factory air bag is a safety device and no manufacturer, retailer orthe author can condone or recommend removal or disabling of such a device on a street driven car.

The decision to remove/Disable and the actual removal/Disabling of the factory air bag is the sole responsibility of the car owner so the
author take NO responsibility for any damages that may occur as a result of the car owners decision. If you have a factory air bag and are willing to accept responsibility for removing it because the vehicle is used only for show, racing or other off-road use, then us the instructions below:

To Disable airbags and turn off airbag warning lights on a Porsche '90-94 911 (964):

Disconnect Battery for ~1 hr to let airbag system capacitors discharge before starting.

Open panel on right side of center console under dashboard.

Remove metal bracket which supports airbag wire harness (one bolt).

Turn over bracket and you will see the black flat connector held in place with a orange plastic clip.

Remove clip.

Unplug black connector, this will disable the whole airbag system.

To turn off airbag warning lights, jump pins 3 to 4 on female side of connector with a short piece of wire.(Note: pin 3 wire color is Black-Brown, pin 4 wire color is Black-Red)

Thanks Marc, for the glove tip. My car is in storage now, so I will have to wait until Spring to complete the job.

Is it an urban myth or true abouth the wife who came home to find her husband sitting dead in drivers seat with screwdriver through his forehead, fitting instructions in his hand, the air bag deflated and an aftermarket steering wheel on ground next to car??

I heard 'Haynes Manuals' got sued for miliions!

One last tip. If you want to use a flat wheel but still want relief from the dash and column stalks, the folks at Smart Racing Products appear to be the only retailer offering a 1.25" (32mm) spacer.
Good luck and be safe.
