manufactured after the bugs?
Hi - I'm still looking and I remember getting some good advice here some time ago.
I am investigating a car the details of which are as follows:
VIN: WPOZZZ96ZPS400946
Eng: 6ZP50946
Built: 9/92
Can anyone tell me if it has been built after rectification of the problems mentioned from time to time by Bruce Anderson in Excellence - we have moved house and I cannot find my old copies of the magazine.
Any information at all on the machine above would be appreciated.
many thanks
Dan

Dan,
Yes, thats a 1993 model year car, so its over both the DMF issue and the cylinder head leaks. The only thing that it didn't come from the factory was the distribuitor vent kit as those were the 'R' seriers cars (94my). However, most 'P' series cars had the vent kits installed very early on.
If its a nice car go for it! I too have a 'P' car and in my opinion they are the best 964s.

Dan,
When you look at the engine, if there is a white hose going to the distributor from a big black plastic pipe which comes from the fan in the left corner of the engine, the distributor vent kit is installed. If it's not there, it's inexpensive from Porsche, maybe $10-$15 US, and user installable.

Many thanks Bill and Riccardo. It is said to have 75,000km on the clock and looks good in the photos. Price is too high though -- a dealer has it and wants $AUD85,000. I haven't done the conversions yet into USD or Sterling, but it's high.

Dan, tell me which model you are purchasing (eg coupe, Targa, Cab and whether it's a turbo body variant) and I'll give you an idea of the price range. A couple of years ago I collected and graphed stats on advertised prices for 964's in Melbourne over about 9 months before I bought mine. Although the data is now 18 months old, I'm sure we can get in the range by doing a bit of an adjustment. I noticed at the time that there was little difference between private sale and dealer advertised prices, despite what I had expected. Not sure though whether Melbourne prices vary much from Brisbane.
A$85k seems very steep unless it is a very low mileage cab, or a genuine turbo body.

Dan, I checked my charts which only went to '92 and they showed an average price of A$85k (excluding one outlier - probably a dud) on the price trend curve for '92 from a sample of 13 model 964 coupes. That was from samples current in the second half of 2001, so I'd estimate current prices would be maybe 10% lower (over 18 months) = ~A$77.5k. This isn't real scientific as the short term price change is probably more affected by current market conditions than the long term price trend and I haven't been keeping tabs.
Have you been checking on line ads at Drive.com.au etc?

Peter - thanks. Yes I have been checking at drive.com.au and Carsales. There are a few 1989/90 cars on offer. Prices seem to vary around $AUD60k to 75k. Some of the 1989 C4's can apparently go for in the high $A50k.
By the Way - on the subject of the C4's - any real problems with servicing the 4WD system? It's getting pretty long in the tooth now. Are parts readily available for the 964 4WD system?
I remember Bruce Anderson saying that the C4 made a good snow car - ha! fat lot of snow we get here in sunny Queensland. However, a friend with a 1990 C4 took me to a Porsche Club trackday. Bone dry and hot as Hades. His C4 whizzed around the corners like nothing else - noticeably faster and a tighter line than the 2WD cars.
