Unhappy Serious problem. Think its expensive, ideas?

Guys, driving today to woking.

cars running brilliant and I'm really enjoying myself making good progress.

Get to where I'm going ish (brookwood cemetary) not sure exactly so slow down while im looking for signs.

Then it happens. hrible metalic rattling sound and Engine stalls. all warning lights come on.

car would not re start.

any idea's dual mass flywheel colapse? timing chain?

cheers

sorry to hear this... let's hope for the best (clutch, alternator failure and not engine failure)

Is the car cranking??? Meaning, is the engine rotating?

Engine fan is in place? (to check for failure of alternator bearings... alternator failure...

Any oil in the floor?

Give us some more details...

No pool of oil on floor.

fan appears in tact not sure how to check it but I did tug on it a bit no movement or seemingly colapsed bearings.

I did try to start it and it was as if the batery was flat i.e it turned over slowly/slugishly then when it caught horrible metalic rattle . so turned off and didnt try to start it again .

OK... do not try to turn it on again...

Clutch travel? Is the clutch working normal? (can you depress it normally?)

Next I would check the oil for metal particles...

It sound like an exploded clutch disc. Difficult to say with so few information.
If the engine turns, even slowly, we can hope nothing's wrong with its valvetrains or rods.
The problem is probably on the transmission side (could see it on a 3.2 : after a big noise, engine was very hard to turn. And suddenly it was free again, could turn but no transmission : clutch discs exploded...)

My bet is the alternator. When mine went at 80mph it stalled the engine and wouldn't start (bearing frozen). I was 5 hours from home and kept cranking it until it came loose, it started, sounded like a hoover vacuum but made it home with a stop to recharge battery on the way.

Hope you have some luck.

Am I right in thinking the alterantor sits behind the big fan? I hope your right. that would be a lot cheaper than a clutch. and I can get the fan painted red at the same time

Hi

Sorry to say it, but looking on the dark side of the spectrum..............I had exactly the same things happen to my old 964, it had spun a big end bearing on the bottom end, the engine locked up and wouldn't turn over. £5.5 k rebuild!! hopefully its not the same deal for you.........maybe it's something minor
keep us posted and good luck

Ash

Pesty, don't want to add more doom and gloom, but mine did this recently. i thought it was the alternator, or the fly-wheel, unfortunatly it was a big-end, No 3. New crank and re-build. let's hope this hasn't happened here. Raymond

oh **** I was expecting a big bill but not that big. I need to try and get it transported up to ninemeister this week. I will have to use the bike for work. but I will probably have to sell the bike or borrow on the house if it is a major engine re build. Trying to pretend yesterday didnt happen.

My recovery service are saying they will not transfer the car again because they did it once. even though I was near JZ machtech and told them to take it there at 3pm they didnt show up until 6:20pm, JZ shut at 6pm so they brought it home.

How can I check the alternator?

Sorry to hear about your trouble Phil. It's normal to speculate but I guess you will have to wait for the verdict till the car goes into surgery.Hope it wont be too bad. Cheers

It didn't perhaps sound like a metal chain being pulled from a metal garbage-bin did it? My good friend's '75 911S had the chain tensioner collapse resulting in a very particular sound. I hope that's not the noise you're hearing, although the DIY repair on that is sub $1k on the early motors. Since I'm the newbie I'll shut-up now. Good luck! Cheers!
