Serious problem. Think its expensive, ideas?

Pesty, do you know for a fact that you need a new crank? Sometimes these can be machined instead of replaced....if you do know for a fact then I would get a 2nd hand one...the new ones are f***ing expensive....but I would want to buy one with a guarantee that it can be returned of its no good. Try Porschapart or someone like that (i.e. a reputable company...)

Hi christer.
No, i dont know for sure that the crank is a total loss yet. Im only going on what the mechanic has said is likely, not deffinate until he checks it out fully. But until then I'd like to find out as many options as possible and needing a new crank does seem like it may be a possibility.

Ok my engine is now back in the car and running. I will pick it up on thursday or friday.
Top and bottom end rebuild using a second hand cranck shaft. While the engine was out I got the guy to fit an RS clutch/flywheel at the same time. I figured I might as well get something out of it while Im spending so much.
seems all went well apart from the speedo is not working. When the car origonaly stopped the AA man thought it was a flat battery ( to be fair because the engine was siezed it have the same symptoms) He attached one of those high voltage things they carry. My mechanic thinks this may have blown up some electronic unit(cant remember which one)
so car is still not 100%.

Glad to hear you're getting there Pesty! At least now you've got a good strong engine. Do you mind if I ask how much it cost for the rebuild? (It's my worst nightmare!!)
Hope you get the speedo fixed! Maybe it's just a fuse!! Does the car run OK?

According to the mechanic car runs fine. No stalling cos of the flywheel but it does hunt a little.
Havnt got a final cost yet. an estimate was around 4.5k for rebuild + flywheel 700 ish probably some other costs I would imagine.
all in all its more than I have spent on all my other cars added up together by around 4k in 15 years of driving
Much as I love this car I cant help but feel I should have bought that evo 6.

I suppose it one of the risks of buying an older car. You'll just have to keep it for a while to get your money back - it won't depreciate as much as an Evo 6 would, so the cash you'd save in lack of depreciation can go towards the re-build!!!

glad it's coming back together. My upcoming rebuild has been quoted at £3,500 ish, but i was thinking about having other stuff done at the same time too, although not a l/w flywheel and clutch. decisions, decisions...

it seems to be ok, there is a reasonable amount of oil there but it's managable at the moment. On the plus side I'm well protected against rust. Am off to Le Mans in the morning, with lots of spare oil on board! Car drives fine, it's just overly messy, and smelly, and smoky etc...much like most 964's then...
By July I should have effectively a new engine though, so am most looking forward to that.

Good to hear that your car is practically fixed. It is off course a lot of money but at least you should be ok for the years to come. Once you're up and running again you will quickly forget any Evo6. Good luck with it now.

There is a relay for the speedometer, which could be the problem. It is an expensive relay--$180 or so if I remember correctly--so I would try to get one from a junkyard, and if you can find one from another car to borrow to test whether that is the problem that would be ideal. This would be fairly high on my list of things to check for the speedo.
