Post Replacing rear speakers

Hi all,

I am going to replace the speakers in the rear parcel shelf, can anyone tell me what size speakers will fit?
And is the rear shelf easy to remove?

Thanks in advance

Ian,

I think they are 6x4" speakers. You may have problems getting them with grills. I beleive the parcel shelf just un-screws - screws visible when rear seats folded forward.

Check out the archives. This has probably been covered before.

Yes, save those 4"x6" grills:

BTW, the rear speaker grills aren't even real Blaupunkt units. They have a 944 part number on them, and are shown in PET. So, I suppose you can get a new set from the dealer, if you have the need.

Ian,

Assuming the 6" x 4" grilles are the same as on my 993, be careful. They are a "snap" fit and crack very easily on removal. In our hot climate mine certainly did.

I've read posts of replacing them with larger speakers such as standard 6" x 9". That requires cutting the shelf and to look out for shallow mounting depth.

Just a suggestion, try the Infinity KAPPA model 4x6. They are a direct drop in and wire up with original connectors. Original grills fit over them, I used Velcro to attach

I installed a pair of Boston Acoustics 6x4s in my C4 a couple of years back. They're surface mounted and therefore easy to install.

I've never thought they sound all that good, though, and in retrospect, I should have spent the money on some better components for the front.

On Saturday I installed a hinged boot floor on which to mount an amp and crossover. Hinged so I can get to the spare wheel and battery etc. I tapped threads in the chassis rails so I could bolt on the hinges.

Next step is to get the cables routed through the bulkhead which is harder than you might expect.

I've now given up on saving the driver's side passenger footwell and am resigned to filling it with a GRP bass enclosure.

If anybody has done this kind of thing I'd be interested to hear their experiences...

I replaced my back speakers with Blaupunkt from Crutchfield. They were arount 60 to 70 dollars and they sound fine. They were 4x6. Also they come with a grille. The original price was around 300$.
